Just found this worrying article on Newsnow

    http://www.kentnews.co.uk/sport/gillingham_s_jack_payne_continues_to_court_interest_1_999448

Not sure what to make of it, it seems to have come out at an odd time seeing as it is related to scouts at the Barnet game. Is it lazy journalism? The start of the season has been so positive, which doesn't sell many papers so are they just trying to drum up a little turmoil in order to shift a few more rags.

Obviously Payne has been a stand out performer for the club last season and has started this season in a similar vein of form. If clubs are sniffing about I doubt we are in a position to refuse, so if he does go, what level / club do you think he would go to and where would you spend the cash to strengthened the team?

Another striker would be high on the list but considering the system we play if we lost Payne I think we would need to find another holding midfielder to replace him.

BSG - I saw the same article in a Kent on Sunday that the other half picked up today.

Quite an interesting read, J Payne appears a sensible lad and I'm sure the future bodes well for him. Any interest before next season can clear off though!

We need to keep him, he is a good player with a great future, he don't need to leave for a Championship club as we should be a championship club in the next few years hopefully.

Reckon Montrose is more than capable in the holding role . So if say Norwich wanted to swap Payne for a usless striker they don't want like Cody Mcdonald I don't think many would mind. My point being if he is worth say 3-400k we could get that striker we need as the midfield has quality in depth anyway.<wizard>

I don't see what there is to worry about. The article is poor to say the least. Scouts at the game, my god what a surprise! Must be something going on there. Er wait a minute, isn't that what scouts do? Go to games, watch players? Bet there were scouts at every game this season, everywhere. There is nothing concrete in the article. Positive things in it from Payne though. He comes across sensible and level headed. If we lose him I'll wish him the best of luck and I believe we have quality and depth to cope, unlike seasons past, but I don't think it'll happen this season. Things are going well at the moment, i'm a happy fan, and it seems like the reporter need to write something and went by the golden rule "when in doubt BS rules" and this is a steaming pile of BS.

Don't think Mr. Scally will let him be sold because it doesn't make financial sense. If we sell him now we will get about half a million but if we sell him next summer (let's face it it's likely he will be) we may get closer 1 million and will of had a full season out of him.

Definitely agreeing with Gemini. Sounds like a reported looking for something, anything to write!

Beside, Jack Payne isn't allowed to leave until I've married him <ok> <laugh>

forced marrages aside. he has plenty of potential and it comes down to how much we get offered for him. lets be honest we can't get in the kids way as he has potential to become a championship/prem player easily and if the resultant of us selling him is that we have enough money to strenghten the squad considerably in 2 or 3 positions then you have to ask why not. if someone comes in with money similar to that for jacko with plenty of add ons and sell on clauses then i think we have to let him go. we dont want to end up in a jarvis situation again where a player goes but not on our terms

I agree we should sell him when we are in the position of power, not the other way around. However we probably won't get as much for Jack as we did for Simeon. A goalscorer cost's more than a defensive midfield player, we may still get half a million for him however, not to be sniffed at.

Swop him for Cody, Jack and lady Gillingham can get married in Norwich and we will have the best strike force in league 2. SORTED.

Jack Payne hasn't scored wildly in recent fans player ratings, if you were the buying club would you think £500,000 a good deal. I like Jack Payne but can't believe anyone is going to pay that much for him.

Payne is showing Championship potential and if a decent offer came in it would make sense to all parties to let him go. Remember the sale price has more to do with length of contract remaining rather than playing potential and the club has made a right mess of selling in the past. Nosworthy, Sidebe and Crofts went for nothing and Jarvis for peanuts, all down to poor contract management and economics of relegation. In the case of Crofts, the idiot Dimson sent him on loan to Wrexham rather than cashing in on the one gem that he had.
So, maximise the proceeds now when the options to replace him are plentiful and spend the money in the areas that are needed. The Lady can sap his strength at Coventry or Watford and good luck to the lad.

jacko only went for 600K remember plus add ons, it just happens that most of the add ons were triggered last year with them getting promoted and him firing them to promotion in the closing stages of the season
