That was quite a mystifying decision, & you'd have to ask the manager. In his defence, I would argue that Charlie Austin is not fat - he's a big lump of a bloke. Not every athlete can strip down to zero body fat and no bulk, doesn't mean he's unfit. He looked up for it, got little to no service, went looking for the ball, nothing quite came off for him or Longy. Gabbi still looks the most threatening when he's on the pitch, but nothing came off for him either.
Maybe he can add some pace to Everton's front line. Actually, I've solved it. QPR on loan. For 3 years.
Tadic the enigma, watching his performance yesterday, several times his pass went straight out of play when it was easier to find a team mate, was it a mental problem, i.e. spacial awareness gone wrong, eyesight, a visit to Specsavers perhaps or a footwear problem? Whatever, none of his team mates berated him at the time and his body language gave the impression that he wasn't too bothered? On another point, the dead ball delivery yesterday was appalling, the only corner that caused a problem was JWP's late one. SD even sent one back to the half way line, some kind of botched training ground move? Several free kicks from the flanks saw all of the big men up in to the penalty area, only for the free kick to taken short and backwards and possession lost, what on earth is that all about?
Taking Gabbi off and putting two strikers up front was done on the advice of the experts on the Echo site and some on here. What could possibly go wrong with advice like that?
Remarkably Wiki says Yoshi is 6'2" but I think the point is more he isn't as physically imposing as WH & VVD and got isolated with a fresh striker who is very physically imposing. However ... conceding isn't a late goal obviously isn't an issue if you've scored 2 earlier. Maya had a great game and made this one 'mistake' To me this isn't about who we've got but who we haven't. If we had a real striker and attacking midfielder then it would take the pressure off the others. Dominating for 70 mins in front of a sceptical crowd will have a negative effect on most players and the goals scored against us recently have a tale to tell (e.g. Vokes, Murray, Crouch) None of those would start for us but they represent what we had in SRL and Pelle. I've also seen some good performances from attacking midfielders in other sides who will never play in the Champions League. I don't know who I'd play and who I'd drop from Tadic, Boufal and Redmond as they can all play well but together they demonstrate they all weak in one key area where it was Mane's strength ... directness. Les needs to get busy
That’s the point. I can hardly think of a player in the Burnley squad that i’d swap for one of ours in terms of raw ability. (Wood/Vokes for Austin but that’s more to do with offering the Pelle style aerial threat up top).
Two strikers wasn’t in itself the wrong move. It should have been Long/Gabbi, and moving Boufal away and isolating him wide was barking mad.
We have got a real striker and an attacking midfielder though. We also have a team where nearly all the players are playing below their potential.
