Mp seems to like possession football, this team however was put together with high press and attack in mind, this style of holding the ball and patiently waiting for an opportunity doesn’t work with our players, we always did best when we forced errors from our oppenants with pressing football, players like Redmond, Tadic, Boufal are not players to hold a ball or sideways pass they are players to run at and put pressure on the opposing defenders ready to feed the ball to Austin or Gabbiadini or for them to pounce on a mistake, long is not going to pass a ball through a defence or unlock one, he will stretch a defence, make them lose shape, we are built as an attacking team but playing possession football. For possession football to work you need skilful strong players, that don’t need to be fast but are clinical, we don’t have them, we have always needed more shots than anyone else to score. I hate to say it, as I’m a fan of giving a manager time, for instance I think Koeman would have turned Everton round giving time, but MP just isn’t the right manager for Saints, I think he is a decent manager but wrong players here for him
Frankly I'm find a lot of this hilarious. Genuinely. I've not see the game, just followed it on he radio, so I won't comment on this performance. We have fans blaming the board, fans blaming the manager (s) and fans blaming the players. Any chance that someone sensible might suggest it isn't black and white and possibly a bit of blame lay at each of these doors? Here's my very brief take on the last 18 months: The board ****ed up last summer not signing that attacking player we needed. Puel actually was doing a good job for the first half of last season. Slowly implementing his ideas. Ok, no fireworks but building. Then the fans ****ed up by getting on his back. Then I believe the players ****ed up by being affected by the fans and then not trusting the manager. We should have shipped out any player who wasn't on board. It's too late now, he's gone, but I said all last season that we should have got behind Puel and given him until about now (I believe I posted back then he should have the first three months of this season). Now things are either the same or worse and we're all whinging again. We've sort of made our bed and are now lying it. Feels a bit wet. I usually stick up for the club/players/manager, but it isn't good at the moment but I feel it is sort of deserved. Brought it on ourselves.
So he's failed to come in and stamp his authority on the team? I don't buy that. If that is true though, then there's bigger problems than I thought.
Spot on. Completely our own doing from bottom to top. Would love to hear the opinion on those who slated Puel early doors and wanted him out on this post.
You can't believe what? Bertrand and Van Dijk 100% wanted to go. Players went to the board and got puel sacked. Not hard to see that some of the players could have attitude problems
Can't remember when, but Schad said when we appointed Pellegrino that Alaves were defensively compact and scored with most shots on target, which were few and far between. Seems to be the same here without the goals. Think I owe him an apology as I hoped it would be different with us!
If that was that obvious from day one then he should have had the stones to go to the board and say that he wants them gone. I keep saying I'm not calling for him to go. But plenty like yourself Beef keep saying things like "you can't blame the manager" which is frankly absurd, whatever way you spin it.
2nd part of the season? you mean the last 7 or so games when the season was already over? He was scoring loads post January when he first got Gabbiadini. Only reason Puel had Sims was because he rotated his players and gave him a chance. Thats a merit to Puel as far as i'm concerned, I don't see Slattery getting a look in under Pellegrino. So thats 6.5 to Pellegrino's 7 first team players. Tadic et al played well under Koeman, we completely change style and have played badly and not changed style since so continue to play badly. Its the manager. I'm not saying the manager is completely at fault as the board chose him for our players, but the cause is the manager. Cant blame Tadic, Redmond, Boufal etc for being misused.
So the problem isn't primarily that we play terrible football, it's that the fans weren't sufficiently supportive of our terrible football, leading to more terrible football? This is a truly revisionist account of the first half of last year, I'm afraid; we were just as goal-shy then as we are now. Scored 4 in our first 5 PL matches; 11 goals in our first 10; 14 in our first 15; 19 in our first 20. At no point were we anything other than what we've been since, which is a team that occasionally flatters to deceive, but never scores with regularity.
Look at my post again. I said I blame the board more then the manager... I even said in a post above I blame him as well..
True enough there. We're boring, but we're boring at both ends, whereas some of those sides provide an awful lot of entertainment in their own box (though not West Brom, as Pulis has this boring thing down to a science).
Slattery is only just getting back on track after a big injury. No manager would give him a first team chance yet.
