The Ensil guy is a pompous arse, just ignore him until he says something valuable. Every time I'm on the Spurs board he's spouting the same self aggrandisement and babble.

Anyway, I think United will have too much for Spurs, as usual.

Smalling is a great defender and should be first choice regardless of injuries. Young, Nani, Berbatov and Rooney are formidable.

3-1 or 2-0 to United I think. For fantasy football reasons Smalling and Nani to score.

Not indicating an advantage may of been seen as a refereeing mistake, but it still doesn't change the fact that if the whistle doesn't go then there is no free kick, it's really that simple. The ref could of made clearer gestures but Gomes was completely at fault to expect a foul that had not been called.

Gomes' actions do not mean that a free-kick shouldn't have been awarded, though.
The ref claimed that he played an advantage, there was no advantage and even if he had indicated that he was playing one, he still should've gone back and given the free-kick.

He didn't give any gesture at all, let alone the required physical and vocal ones.
The linesman pointed out the offence and yet he still didn't give it.
    Dire refereeing.

You sure about that? There was no flag raised whilst Nani was fouled, nor whilst Nani handled the ball.

Ten minutes left, but United were 1-0 up, and hadn't really been worried by Spurs' attack.

Even with the ref playing the advantage (regardless of if he made the correct gesture) Gomes was still at fault for just throwing the ball down to go on the counter, then walking away and expecting it to be a free kick, he was in full control of the ball and gave it away stupidly, he was completely at fault for not playing to the whistle.

The ref should have blown the whistle in the first place.

However, Gomes shouldn't have assumed there was an advantage/free kick when there wasn't.

    Neither were blameless.

The flag went up when Nani kicked the ball.
I think that the linesman assumed the ref saw the handball, which is pretty poor, if understandable.

Ten minutes is a long time in football.
A single set-piece could've resulted in a goal and you would have thought that Spurs would've committed a lot to attacking in the last 10 minutes with only a goal in it.
It may not have come to anything, but the chance never arose.

    Gomes' actions were irrelevant.
There was no advantage played and the ref didn't then issue a free-kick after he was informed about the handball by his linesman.

If that did happen, where's your proof that the linesman contradicted the ref? Or even notified him of something he missed?

Plus, when nani kicked the ball... I see no raised flag.

But it's not irrelevant, he had control of the ball for long enough WITHOUT the whistle being blown, yes it "should" of been a free kick, but we see dozens of decisions every single game that "should" be free kicks that aren't given, he simply did not play to the whistle and it cost you a goal.

Why else would he raise his flag?
He was indicating an offence had been committed.

Because the referee didn't do his job properly, which was the original question.

Raised it far too late. For both offences he kept the flag down, and he also did when Nani struck the ball into the net.

At the end of the day, you're trying to justify losing a match by placing the blame on the referee.

If you want to blame anybody, or call anybody inept its the linesman. He also ballsed it up with Pedro Mendes' goal that never was, and he ballsed it up this time.

Maybe he didn't, but it's still a poor excuse to blame him for the goal, if Gomes had simply did the basics of the game and played to the whistle then this whole debate would be irrelevant.

    As I said originally:

I've pointed out that the officials got a lot wrong and that there was still time for a goal, but you won't agree regardless of what's said or shown, so can we just drop it please?

Well, you don't have to engage in the discussion at the end of the day.

And if I don't, then your incorrect claims go unchallenged.

That just adds weight to my argument! <laugh>
