So with the events in Catalonia, it is theoretically possible that Barca will be ejected from La Liga which will get rid of El Classico, therefore there would be even more call for a European Super League with the so-called 'elite' of Europe. As neither of our sides are likely to be involved, we'd be left behind an English football league system without Man U, Chelski, Man City, Tottenham and probably Liverpool and Arsenal... Would you be in favour of a European Super League in this case or against it? Obviously this is all hypothetical atm.

Well for me personally, I'd love a European Super League. The big six can piss off and I wouldn't miss them one iota. Sure it might reduce the amount of money in the rest of English football by quite an amount, but heck the whole thing is built on sand anyway. Restructuring is probably necessary at some point.

I know it won't, but like I said this is hypothetical. And in theory it could, in practice it probably won't.

What I find interesting is to consider: in the short term you'd think it creates a competition where more (or just new/different?) teams think they have a chance of winning.

But in 10-15 years time would there just be a new 'top 6' ?

It would probably lead to more English players playing in the premier league but fewer playing in the elite league.

Foreign players moving ot English teams would probably show even less loyalty than they currently do - in their desperate attempts to impress and move on to the elite teams squads.

La Liga ejecting Barcelona would be cutting their own throats. I don’t believe Catalunya will ever become independent anyway, but supposing they did, both themselves and Spain would gain no benefit whatsoever from Barcelona being ejected.

On the second point, in some strange, remote universe where Portsmouth get back in the top flight, you would want to be tested against the best clubs in the country, surely?

TLL failing to suspend disbelief for a few seconds yet again. The idea was to just think about it and think What If...

In answer, yes, they could piss off. There you go. Now back to reality. ;)

I was talking about the likelihood of Barca being kicked out of La Liga, rather than the likelihood of the European league.

One is pretty unlikely. The other is less likely than peace in the middle east.

Yes, PL wasn't writing about likelihood, he was asking what people might like to happen IF... That means you go along with what he suggests just for the moment. Afterwards you can return to reality.

I read it as he was suggesting it as a realistic possibility, which the bit I bolded certainly isn't imo.

Don't know why you've tried to make this about me though. Bizarre.

As much as I dislike how much media attention the top six clubs get the league would be a lot worse without them, imo.

You'd get a new top bunch over time too.

It'd just be your Villas, Evertons, Leeds etc. Rather than United/Liverpool.

Wouldn't be half as successful as they're expecting. The novelty would wear off relatively quickly, and the ultimate effect would be less revenue, not more...the national leagues would be kneecapped, and the highly lucrative CL would either be replaced wholesale or lose a lot of its lustre.

I’m unsure tbh. Can see it going the way you describe but can also see it being like an NBA/NFL type league with lots of interest and all the money gravitating to it

Personally the only way I could see it agreeable & work for everyone would be if it was made up of perhaps the top 20 teams in Europe (two from each of the big five leagues & then subsets from the rest). Each year there would be relegation of the bottom team from that country/area back to the domestic league & promotion from it.
