    tbh i could'nt give a flying one about bias either way,but just as Sir Matt put United on the map at home and abroad so did shanks for us.

    Your 2nd paragraph shows your talking wikinese and need ****e to back up your bollixstatements and were'nt around at the time.

    Shank's teams were a threat to teams home and abroad mate and if in doubt write a letter to the clubs in England and Europe that mattered at that time(including Utd)and ask them if im right.

    I think it's easier to consistently win the league nowadays, but much harder to consistently win European trophies. After all, the Premier League winner (or at least the top 4) is largely influenced by the money clubs spend, hence the big four / now big five dominance. Back in the 60s and early 70s when players weren't paid as much and transfer fees were fairly low the smaller teams stood a chance of challenging, but as the money in the game has gone up so winning the league, and now qualifying for the CL, becomes something of a self fulfilling cycle - win it one year and you earn the money needed to spend to challenge for it again the next year. Success begets success.

    In contrast, whilst the CL winner needs to be a top team, they are also largely the team that gets the luck when they need it, whether it's last minute equalizers / winners, wrongly disallowed / allowed goals, shocking refereeing in your favour, opponents getting injured / sent off, or something else. I'm not saying they only win it through luck, but unless they are an outstanding team, like Barca last year, they need that little bit of luck when not playing well or missing players.

    That's because there are so many more teams around that are able to knock even a top team out on their day - Real, Barca, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Milan, Inter, Bayern, even Spurs and Schalke were all good enough to put other top teams out when they played well. Whereas in the old EC there were generally no more than four or five top teams, usually the champs of England, Italy, Germany and Spain and sometimes the odd surprise package, that really threatened to knock out the other contenders. As long as you were the best out of those top four or five, and won your domestic league, you could usually win the comp pretty consistently, like Real, Ajax, Bayern and Liverpool all managed to do for periods when they put great sides together.

    Great comment mate.

    <ok>

    My way of looking at it is that after a 42 game slog and finishing 1st you earned the right to enter the European Cup on merit,it was a weaker comp than the CL as you say.

    They need to change the name of the CL though because thats where the comparisons and arguement begin

    Very true - the EC was a more exclusive competition whilst the CL is more of a money spinner / publicity exercise for a lot of the top clubs. But then that's the nature of football nowadays - there are more clubs wanting a piece of the pie and unwilling to accept missing out if they are only second or even third or fourth best in their national league.

    Tbh I think whatever they call it, as long as it is still the most prestigious competition in Europe there will still be the comparisons and arguments. It's the nature of football - you always measure your team / club against others to gain whatever bragging rights you think you can.
