After 10 consecutive seasons in the top flight of English football the bubble finally burst on Wearside as relegation finally became a reality. Season after season of battling the drop finally took its toll and the inability to invest wisely over the past few seasons led to the eventual downfall of this famous football club. From the moment that Sunderland A.F.C. were promoted in 2007 they have flirted with the bottom 3 leading to almost an acceptance amongst the support that a relegation scrap loomed, but year after year hope remained that they could continue to haul themselves safe with a typical end of season revival that Sunderland became ever so renown for. Eventually a 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth ended any hopes that they could miraculously repeat their remarkable survival feats and they were relegated to the Championship for a joint record 4th time with a measly point total of just 24.

Sunderland perhaps may have seen relegation as more of an opportunity than a step back to try and rebuild the foundations and become competitive once more, but it's not quite worked out like that. 13 games into the new season and the Black Cats have registered just 1 win and 9 points, sitting 23rd in the division - ahead of only cash-strapped Bolton Wanderers. With Simon Grayson at the helm, a proven Championship manager, surely things can only get better for the North East outfit, but the losing mentality which is almost etched into the culture at Sunderland, is proving to be a difficult barrier to overcome.

Having watched my team, Leeds, win 2-0 at the Stadium of Light I almost felt sorry for Sunderland, a team that has completely lost it's identity, and its supporters - evident by the swathes of empty seats - which have become even more apparent as results have suffered. As far as ambitions for this fantastic football club go, avoiding back-to-back relegations has quickly become the priority and achieving that would certainly represent progress from now until the end of the season. If the Black Cats' form continues on this downward spiral, Grayson's days could be numbered, as could Sunderland's days as a 2nd division football club. Sunderland will rely on their survival instincts with another attempt at the great escape - only this time, they can't afford to go down.

Its a bit rich for a Leeds fan to be pointing out the blindingly obvious to another club when they've had such a successful run over most of the ten years we've played in the Premiership.
Cheeky Yorkshire Bastard springs too mind.

You're almost into Lawro terrority in terms of sucking your buddy's cocks here, good old Grayson, things can only get better, yes the losing culture at Sunderland is the reason he's been a shower of **** so far.

Devastating insight here, if they stay in the relegation places, they COULD be relegated.

    Actually they can.

Simply stating he's a proven championship manager - which he quite clearly is, overachieved at Preston and didn't deserve to be sacked from Leeds.

I don't think you can read properly Charlie, by saying if Sunderland's form continues on a downward spiral doesn't implicate they're staying in the relegation places you melt.

Technically anyone can afford to go down but unsurprisingly you've taken it literally and it's gone right over your head. The financial implications would be enormous and given how your attendances have plummeted so much from Premier league to championship, they'd drop even more in league one.

So you're saying that if their form continued in a downward spiral (ie getting worse), this doesn't imply that they'll stay in the relegation places? Interesting logic there, so if they maintain their already **** form or get even worse, they'll move up the table?

I know that any team can afford to go down, but the fact that you have to resort to moronic football cliches on the level of "this time they can't afford to go down" shows how original and insightful your views are.

You're clearly missing the point Charlie. Let me try and make this as easy as possible for you to understand. If Sunderland maintain their current form they could still move up in the table, it depends on what the other teams around them are doing. For example if Burton lose their next 3 games and Sunderland lose 2 and draw 1 they will move up in the table whilst still maintaining poor league form, does this make sense to you?

Hardly a cliche, a club of the size and stature of Sunderland cannot afford to be relegated especially given the debt and precarious financial position you are in. Whether you think these so called 'cliches' are moronic or not, you can't deny that relegation would be disastrous.

Why do these boards always attract people who think that telling other people something they already know is in some way intelligent, insightful, or witty?
