I'm not left wing. Left of centre, yes. It's pragmatism. The EU are by far our largest trading partner. Almost half of our trade flows seamlessly through - at the moment!. We're not a member of the single currency. We're not a member of Schengen, so already have control of our borders. In the end, it comes down to one question for me. Will the UK be better off economically by leaving the EU? By just about every bit of evidence I've seen so far the answer is a resounding No!
Definitely in the short term, and maybe in the long term, but this whole "We can change the EU from the inside and make it better" is utter bollocks. History tells us that would not have been the case. The fundamental principles and goals of the EU were always drifting further and further from our own, and they would have only let us have our cake and eat it for so long. The fact that we had to go to them every couple of years and beg for concessions in order to keep membership and not get ****ed over by their batshit policies is testament to that. Ultimately I think we would do okay on our own, providing we had a competent government, which we currently don't, unfortunately.
If you mean the drive by certain EU politicians towards greater integration, I agree. I'm against that too. But the majority of the people of Europe are too. Juncker knows it and admitted it last year. He'll keep trying, but currently he's getting nowhere. We already had more concessions than just about any other member. No, it's not perfect. Far from it. But we're still better off staying and fighting our corner. But the damage done to the economy by this will last a very considerable time.
I think there's opinions on both side of the fence that are getting carried away with it all. If it was as certain to fail as some of the remainers have forecast then I'd imagine the economy would be in a much worse state than it is. I'm prepared to wait it out and like you say hope for the best for the future generations.
I cannot argue with the economic reasons for staying in the EU, they are irrefutable, but I still think in the long run it will be well worth it putting up with them now and getting a headstart on the rest of Europe, who will be ****ed when the EU implodes on itself, and it will.
As I told my Spurs brethren ages ago, the EU already is or is becoming everything my trade despise in systems development/engineering terms. And even worse : real politniks rather than "management politics" .
This one time at the glory hole a guy had a semi. He tried to detatch but I wouldn't let him pull back through the wall. I just bit down harder. There was blood everywhere. It was amazing.
We shouldn't have to hope though. We shouldn't have put ourselves in a position where we need to cross our fingers and hope it'll turn out alright. This decision was foisted upon the nation by outright lies and deceit. The little Englanders bought into the bollocks spouted by Farage and co. I've virtually zero doubt that everybody in the country will be worse off. Ironically, it will be a lot of the insular working class who will get hurt the most. A lot will depend on the type of Brexit we settle for. The way it's going right now, I'd prepare for a lot of pain.
On both sides. Cameron coming out with **** like "Brexit will start WW3" ****ing idiot. Why would you give people the chance to vote on something that could destroy the planet? Oh and "ISIS are Pro Brexit", Yes, what ISIS are really interested in is our tariffs and our fishing quotas....twat. The Leave side were just as bad, with their ****ing NHS bus. All the focus was on who would win and who could tell the most outrageous ****ing lies, but there were no actual facts or even realistic predictions being put forward by anyone. All soundbites and stupid fear mongering.
The EU, as a trading bloc, I have no problem with. It should have stayed as the EEC. It's everything else that is problematic. As for the EU imploding, no one knows that. I would think Farage, as an MEP, would have a better idea on it though. I really cannot stand the EU, or anything it stands for. Bureaucracy, corruption and capitalism at its worst.
Something he didn't say.......the right wing, Brexit backing, non dom billionaire owned rags came up with that line......so probably not the best example.....
Agreed. A lot of what was forecast to happen economically has now occurred, or is occurring. Yes Osborne's warnings of a cliff face fall were wide of the mark. It was almost like the phoney war of 1939. Nothing had seemed to happen, so people just carried on as normal. However, slowly the effect of the plunging pound started to make itself felt. At this time inflation is 3% and rising. Wage inflation is 2.1% and stuck. Meaning people's disposable income is shrinking and that retail spending that has kept the economy afloat for so long will start to fall. It's not getting any better, and depending on the colour of Brexit that emerges, it could get far worse.
IMO, and that of others, Farage is in Putin's pocket. Divide and conquer is Putin's game. It's working well ATM!..
I can't stand the bloke. His image as this smiling goon who likes a pint and a ***, a 'man of the people' myth he's perpetuated. In reality he's a disingenuous, dishonest liar, who doesn't give a flying **** about this country, and has already said he'll **** off if Brexit ends up being ****. I'd love to plant him.
Yeah. He and Assange are both in Putin's pocket. I see Nige was kind enough to go and visit him in the Ecuadorian embassy not too long ago. That's why the septics are so keen to get their hands on Assange. They know where his info came from.
