churchill was a bit of a dick by most accounts, maybe this helped during the war? who knows

I think more than likely it was more about timing than him being anything spectacular. History tends to make some people look better than they were
    Look at the kennedy's

I think it was churchill who said that we had never had it so good after the war. In all honesty after a world war thats not going to be hard

Its a bit like blair imo, people give him far too much credit for his 'victory' over the cons, when some commentators suggested that john smith would have done it anyway

Churchill was a bit of a dick <doh>

Aye, what a dick. I mean how dare he make decisions which ensured we're not speaking in German right now <doh>

    You're from another planet, aren't you? <laugh>

It was Harold Mcmillan and he never said it till the 1960s. I agree with Stereo - there's loads of decent MPs but lots go unnoticed purely because they're dilligently doing their jobs and getting on with them. It's the same with ministers - some are great and some are absoilute ****ers who crave the power and trappings and gorge themsleves silly on it whilst not actually seeking to make a difference when they're in post.

I see once again you are insisting on resorting to personal insult rather than adding anything meaningful to the debate

The defeat of germany was down to a lot more than churchill, not least the efforts of the allies which often get forgotten

Did you know for example that chirchill introduced lecturers and concerts for prisoners?

or that he was severely criticised for using soldiers during a welsh miners strike

or that he nearly started race riots by looking for 'jewish anarchists' after a jewellry heist

and then deployed 124 soldiers when a tip was recieved that thieves were in a building, 2 were shot dead and a 3rd one (peter the painter) was said to have escaped. There is doubt he existed at all
