since we all spend enough time on here, we may aswell learn a few useful things. Been on the FAO Welsh Lads thread and it's gone onto anthems. So got me thinking about anthems...an interesting easy fact for all to learn:

Spain adopted the Marcha Real in 1740, the first adopted national anthem. The Netherlands has an anthem dating back to 1518 but it was adopted after Spain's. Japan's anthem has lyrics that date back to somewhere between 900 and 1185, but it wasn't adopted as a national anthem until 1922.

The Mariana Trench is 10,994 meters deep, that's a hole that not even Sporlock is filling.

 

Liechtenstein's anthem Oben am jungen Rhein uses the same melody as God Save the Queen. In consequence, the tune was played twice before a Euro 2004 qualifying match between England and Liechtenstein.

The katzenklavier ("cat piano") was a musical instrument made out of cats. Designed by 17th-century German scholar Athanasius Kircher, it consisted of a row of caged cats with different voice pitches, who could be "played" by a keyboardist driving nails into their tails.
