Wales would have more chance of competing at the WC but would always want one of the Irish teams there over those ****s.

You have been blinded by the kaleidoscope of nostalgic reminiscences.
He may have been an OK player but nowhere near as good or will have been as good enough for the modern game today.
They had backpasses to the keeper, they didn’t have extra balls around the touch lines that are now played immediately as soon as the ball goes out, they used to call black people “darkies,” we were still stomping on the Irish, Britain was on a high from having just won the war in the immediate prior generation, we were deeply into the Cold War, teams coming to England to play the World Cup didn’t have the home comforts they can all take now with them all over the world with their whole squad such as cooks and physios and such and with better accommodations, the stories you hear from foreign teams going to other countries to play back then are incredible.... and that’s why England still struggles to play well in foreign countries ....... I could go on and on. England had certain advantages at the time over the world still. Times were different then, and thank goodness it changed.
The programme is biased and I am not taking anything away from the man but he is an anachronism in the modern sense of world football and worldview with the way things are going now in the world.
For some of us it’s horrifying to think that’s how the world was, and it was only 50 years ago.
We should re-examine the man and put him and England in better context than just talk about the football. I get that he’s leaving certain legacies but they need to be reviewed with new eyes.

Not much quality on show in the Wales v Ireland game, with only Ramsey and maybe Joe Allen looking they might make something happen. It's a bit of a comedown when you could have Gareth Bale up top and wind up with Hal Robson-Kanu.

Your political diatribe aside, it was a totally different game usually played on mudheaps with beartrap tackling that offered them no protection from the hatchet men of the era. The bottom line is that they were the best of their generation and would have succeeded in any generation given the facilities and training advantages available to the modern players, who tend to be athletes first and footballers second.

It seems the Premier League is beginning to succeed in brainwashing the supporters that football didn't exist before the advent of the Premier League...

Complete and utter tosh. I'll ignore the own Country hating clap-trap, but Bobby Charlton was an amazing footballing talent. As hard as it is to compare eras, he would have been World Class in any Era imo, as would Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks. Alan Ball and Martin Peters would have held their own as well.

Bobby Moore is to this day still the best defender I have ever seen.

I think it was Pele who said that Moore was the best defender he'd ever faced.
Mind you, Yappy probably doesn't rate Pele either!!

I am of an age to have had the privilege of seeing the likes of Bobby Moore live. His reading of a game and utter coolness in any situation I've not seen since.

Ireland will be quite content with that 1st half, not pretty but effective. The longer it stays 0-0 means that eventually Ireland will have to go more adventurous as they have to win, whereas a draw would suit Wales, so it should become more open.......

Not at all. Go back and watch the old World Cup tapes. You'd be amazed how many back passes were made.
