UEFA/FIFA should make a new league to accommodate all Provinces, City-States, Independent Republics etc etc

I know Northern Italy has its own Independence movement. Basque country does. Bavaria does. Scotland obviously does.

Put all those regions together and you could have a healthy league with some of Europe's best teams.

It will cos the only recourse left to spanish government is to suspend catalan autonomy and arrest their regional leaders for illegal actions under the spanish constitution.

And let's be frank like it or no they have been flauting Spanish law and deliberately doing so.

Doing this cannot resolve the issue at all but if the catalan government insist on pushing it then the basque region will.follow immediately

It's a law coming from post Franco constitution. Right or wrong it's theirs not mine so they need to work it out.

We all know it's about taxes andspending so the catalan governmrnt is irresponsible in pushing and Spanish government is highly irresponsible with police last weekend

I don't know enough about the current situation in Catalonia to pass judgement, but as a statement this is naïve and simplistic. It depends what you call "freedom".
The morons in the US who still maintain the right to have weapons of war in their living rooms cite "freedom" all the time.

Politically the motivation for this is economic since Catalonia is such an important and high-grossing area for the Spanish government

Of course the local Catalonian government will want to increase their share of their area's GDP etc if possible

The shaping of this as some kind of deep lying, heart-felt, cultural issue is stretching it from an administrative or governmental point of view, although I don't doubt there are many many Catalans who are passionate about that identity as we saw in the scenes earlier in the week. I'm sure quite a lot of them also realise the economic and political benefit of being separate from Spain though, also

I don't quite understand the situation, tbh.
I was in Barcelona last year, and there was a lot of anti-tourism graffiti and leaflets etc. I got the impression that they're feeling a bit insular. Discouraging tourism would be a bad idea because that's where a lot of income comes from. Coupled with a break from the rest of Spain it all seems a dangerous proposition to me, and a bit backward.

I worry about any kind of nationalism. They're trying to present it as some kind of drive for liberation but as far as I can say nationalism only ever leads people down bad paths

Not sure why that should surprise you (unless you're just taking the piss). Everything I've ever written on here has been anti-devolution, anti-Brexit, etc.
The only hope for peace in the future is for people to stop seeing others as different. Borders are just something to fight over.

Seriously, the Barcelona situation felt a bit odd. There were fly posters all over the place saying no to tourism, and as a tourist it makes you feel a bit uncomfortable.
I went to a number of the Gaudi places. Although I'm not religious, inside the Sagrada Familia was one of the best experiences I've had of that type. For one thing it seems wrong to try and deny others access to such things but also, they've been building the bugger for over 130 years - without tourism they'll never get it finished.
I live in a place that is flooded with tourists in the summer and I know it's a pain in the arse, but that's how it is - it's an important aspect of modern income.
