    If decent quality. Yes.

If a piece of plastic hastily formed into an approximate boot shape... No.

Just to make you feel a bit better after all the stick you've taken over your walking boots -

''There are those out there that still swear by boots and that’s totally fine. If you feel more comfortable in boots, do your thing. That’s fine by me and I certainly won’t judge you.
I personally will never go back to hiking boots for backpacking. I hiked the 2,650-mile PCT in trail runners and never once did I wish that I had a pair of boots.
I summited snowy mountains, forded icy rivers, crossed miles of snow-covered trail, navigated massive scree fields, and hiked for weeks in the rain. I did all those things in running shoes and I'd still do it the exact same way.''

Lol...either ankles of granite or very lucky.

I have ankles of marshmallow...if I wore approach shoes or runners off track I'd be fecked....particularly on high elevation scramble bits...

I call bullshit on the snowy mountain bit btw...unless his blood is antifreeze or he already had no toes to lose. Actually he contradicts himself in the article. Says he wears boots in winter but 3 season trail runners rest of year. So bit misleading to a beginner if reading that.

He is right about weight. Boots should light as possible.

His point about stiff flex sole is also slightly misleading. Again it depends upon the season boot you buy. Summer only boots will be light, breathable and flexible with ankle support but not usually waterproof for the reasons he gives.

3 season boots are for what I call UK weather in UK terrain. Where it's wet cold and soggy a lot of the year. A more rigid sole, waterproof but like waterproof clothing the breathability is limited ...hence the importance of good socks

Winter boots have a very rigid sole because they're proper mountaineering boots to be used in conjunction with crampons for snow and ice.

It's horses for courses really. Knowing what your body needs, the area you are hiking surface wise and typical weather.

Oh and cost.....notice how much he's spending on trail runners lol?

First thing I did when we moved in was buy a big range cooker <laugh>

Got Chinese and pizza shops just six & seven doors away. Chippy five minute walk in opposite direction (and I've got to pass a pub on the way)
