Now that the dust is starting to settle and putting rivalries aside, what have we learned from the Bent and Carroll transfers? We can all debate and discuss for ever who is to blame; did they put those requests in because they wanted to or because they were forced to? Did they go for the chance of bettering their careers or was it just the cash? Did Quinn and Ashley do right taking silly offers for them, to enhance the long term futures of our clubs or were the did big bucks on offer just too good to turn down. The truth is we will all have an opinion and speaking from the Sunderland side I could never envisage Quinn doing anything that would not be for the benefit of the club, mind I could never see Bent walking away. What have I learned, well nothing really, just confirmed what I already knew but had maybe forgotten. When it comes down to it we love our footballers when they do well for us and rightly so. We thank our chairmen and owners when they bring us better players, and rightly so. We adore our managers when they get us those wins, and rightly so. But the only people who really care about our club are the daft buggers like me and you who spend time on internet forums talking about them. Who buy over priced shirts and proudly wear them. Ho scan the newspapers and TV programmes to hear news about them and who spend money they often cant afford to stand in the cold and wet to support them. The next time a Sunderland player kisses his badge I will think, thank you for your affair with us but its me who really loves us.
We can't expect loyalty when this amount of money is involved. Saying that, I don't blame them for grabbing the money. Footballers, especially forwards, have short careers. The high wages are only going to last until their late 20s if they are lucky. They have to get what they can, when they can.
Carroll wasn't forced out. If he'd wanted to stay on 30k a week on Tyneside Ashley couldn't do anything about it except sack him. As he arrived in Liverpool yesterday did he look like a man forced into leaving? Andy is trying to cover his arse. He knows what we think of Judas! Imagine being that hated in your home town.
just heard an interesting quote today, "the only loyalty left in football is with the supporters" a very sad state of affairs, and whilst i was surprised by bent,i have been shocked by carroll. i really did think that he would have stayed for a few years yet, and i feel almost sorry for the real supporters of newcastle who have been stabbed in the back by a local boy. i know that we expect hendo to leave at some point, but i think it was the way carroll behaved that upset our neighbours so much.
syd i said something very similar in an article i oosted on 606 after Benty left. We should not expect loyalty from pkayers and we wont be disappointed. The one slifgtly consoling fact for me is that virtually no club is immune to the circus that is the transfer window. From Sunderland's persective i still think we have come out of it stronger overall than we went in taking account of player movement and the bottom line. Lets hope we can push on tonight. And lets hope i get back in time to see it! I am currentlt on a train to Sheffield so apologies for typos!
I agree blackcat. The winnes for me are ourselves and Liverpool, I know 35 mil is a lot but they did get 50mil from Chelsea and look to have one hell of a strike force. Chelsea have taken a big risk in my eyes and Newcastle are the big losers. The truth is, IMO, Bent no longer suited the style Bruce is trying for and Sessegon and Muntari are massive signings for us.
Syd I reckon you've summed up the state of play pretty damn well. We turn up in all weathers (sometimes at cost of physical damage - still hoping someone finds my left foot at the SoL after WHU) and are in LOVE with the club. Players at best have a torrid fling with us then move on. Taking your view a step further, how many owners/chairman/managers/CEO's view the game as modern day platers do? We are truly fortunate to have Niall. The worst thing about this is I do feel sorry for the skunks , mind I'll enjoy winding them up today e as I've taken the day off to prepare properly for tonight
There's no loyalty amongst most players. How much money do these guys have to earn to be satisfied? Most of us will never come close to their earnings. Pure greed. No respect for the people (the fans and clubs) who've put them where they are.
I came into this world with nothing and I still have most of it! I remember attending a seminar on Fraud some years ago when it was suggested that 90% of people on this planet are susceptible to greed and can be bought. Ridiculous Transfers and wage demands cannot be sustained indefinitely. Hopefully sound management and fiscal restraint will save our club as the bubble bursts as it inevitably will.
Seemingly Carroll put in a transfer request last night. If that was the case what happens to his 10% of the transfer fee?
Spot on. As much as these young lads enjoy playing football, they also have to plan ahead, they can't keep up their lavish spending and lifestyle forever and they need to take all the money they can get whilst its avalible to them
The days of true player loyalty ended shortly after sponsership deals were introduced, which for some on this board was very much in their lifetime, and I guess thats hard to shake. Question: Does your passion for your company that you work for equal the passion for Sunderland? I doubt it, yet we expect that from our players who, when all is said and one, treat playing football as a way of making money (call it a job if you want) as well as doing what they love (although, if you ever look at Ashley Youngs face I think he hates footy!). Kinda like Syd said, kissing the badge to me is like getting a cheeky peck from some lass every Saturday night
Kinda like Syd said, kissing the badge to me is like getting a cheeky peck from some lass every Saturday night cant remember that far back mate
agents are the worst the more their players move the more money they get so have a huge intrest in shifting players on for silly money theres very little loyalty left in football im afraid contracts are more for the player than the club you get a player and he turns out a load of crap you have to pay him till the end like we have with a few lately ,then you get a good player you want to keep and its oh we dont want to keep a unhappy player let him go ,or theres only 18 months on his contract if he dosent sign an extention we will have to sell , till theres a review on agents and players and make them pay some money back to the club if they dont see their contract out supporters will keep getting hump by the loss of thier seemingly loyal players.
