Completely different theme here but I see that Spain has sent in riot police to prevent people voting in the Catalan independence referendum - however, there is not a whisper of international reproach against Spain. How would our media react if Putin did the same ?

 

There is actually - just not via the MSM. Plenty of info & videos on various blogs and in Twitter showing that quite a few governments have contacted the Spanish government to express their 'disappointment' - not that they are taking much notice though. For obvious reasons, one of those was the Scottish Government.

Never mind Putin doing the same - how will the media react when May - or whoever takes over - does the same to Scotland?

 

It now seems to be a case of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - as the crowd cordon off the riot police.

 

It's getting worse there by the minute. Rubber bullets used against peacefull demonstrators, stun grenades, the police kicking elderly people on the ground - the Spanish paramilitary police are animals, nothing else. Waiting for an EU. reaction on this - Article 7 of the EU. treaty states '' The suspension of any member state that uses military force on its own population''. I doubt that the EU. will have the balls to invoke this, but it will be interesting to see.

I think the term 'military force' could prove to be a sticking point - Spain's Guardia Civil are officially described as 'military style' rather than members of the military. I'd like to think that the EU would proceed anyway.

If Twitter is anything to go by, the main backlash will be from the holidaying public - plenty of 'promises' to forget Spain and holiday in Portugal.
