    Yes, I totally agree<ok>

I just don't and never will like so called popular music. As this video points out you still get bands and artists that really do have talent, plus make their own lyrics and music. You just don't see that many in this very commercialized music industry these days unfortunately. What you hear on radio stations like Heart FM is mass produced radio friendly unit shifters sticking to the safe and tested formula to make the suits who run the labels quick £$£.

I am not disputing that some of them have talent and can sing, it's just the younger audience are being starved of diversity in musical styles. The next Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, Radiohead and many others are out there but not getting signed as the recored companies don't want to take a risk an miss the opportunity of making very quick and large amounts of $£$:headbang:

This is what I love about these music threads and why I am addicted to them, they are free and real music lovers post what they like and without adverts<ok>

I love your music thread as like my one I am discovering good music of different styles and of different eras<ok>

    Peace<cheers>

Yeah, but we know exactly what he means. As that Modern Pop Music... video does mention, there is music out there if you go looking for it. Decades ago you didn't need to. It got it's own radio airplay, in amongst the everyday sugery pop music. The USA even took progressive rock to its heart and FM radio stations played AOR almost exclusively, and the BBC did Peel, Freeman, Kershaw, etc.., plus The Old Grey Whistle Test.

Let me recommend Radio Paradise once again. A totally advertisement free Internet Radio station that plays eclectic music. They call it eclectic because they'll play almost anything rock, jazz and pop orientated. But they won't play mainstream. Generally, it all off albums, with the occasional single thrown in: https://www.radioparadise.com/rp_2.php?# The station also has an app for mobiles and tablets.

    This<ok>

It's still out there but does not get the air play it deserves imo. Again this is why these music threads are so good, diverse music old and new posted by real music heads as I like to call it<ok>

BBC Radio 6 Music is probably the best radio station in this country, if not the world. Diversity is their watchword, and they must be responsible for giving loads of acts a leg up into the public awareness. I know I have "discovered" dozens of new (to me) bands while listening to 6. Compared to the complete **** dished up by Heart and the like, Radio 6 is a shining beacon in the wilderness.

Here's an example of a band I heard first on the Radcliffe and Maconey show one afternoon:

Radio Paradise just played Single Handed Sailor by Dire Straits. I remember really, really liking them. They were going to be a gentle landing from the death of rock music as punk rock took over. Then Dire Straits started shifting white goods and shifting records and I lost interest. Personally, I think this is where they were at their best. When they were the sultans of swing and a brilliant club band. Wild West End:

Total change of pace. I don't quite know why, but I adore this tiny incidental piece of music like few others. It is sheer beauty. Those chugging cellos with the violin over the top just blow me away, and the bowed double basses sounding like no electric ever could. It can make me smile, laugh or cry. It just depends on the mood. A genius Ennio Morricone composition for Cinema Paradiso. Toto & Alfredo:

This isn't technically a song but thought it merited a post.
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre) Vs Billy Rymer (Dillinger Escape Plan) in some sort of Drum Off.
If only I could play to even 5% of Rymers ability...

UTR - this is classic music snobbery. I really find it odd when people make statements about "never will like so called popular music"..... it's almost like you have set your mind and that's it, no change. It's not cool to like it.

    Could be one of these:

"Football was better in my day"

"I've always voted for party X, my dad id, my Grandfather did and so did his. I always will."

"Wine with a screw top? I won't drink that."

    "I'd never drink Hungarian wine"

"It's not a pork pie if it's not made in Melton Mowbray"

    "I wouldn't drink blended whisky"

    Etc.

The music industry has forever been thus. If anything, the record companies have less of a grip on the industry now, because it's far easier for bands to get at least some initial recognition without getting noticed by an A&R guy. It's true that the top of the charts are often dominated by certain musical styles, but it has ever been thus...in the weeks following the release of Nevermind, the singles charts were topped by such luminaries as Color Me Badd and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch; the album itself scraped number one for two non-consecutive weeks before being unseated.

What sort of new music are you looking for? Because I'm sure you could be pointed in the direction of such, if desired.

Each to their own , but I don't see how you can say Never will like so called popular music . I suppose each of us has a different opinion of what Pop music is / was .

For me , ABBA were fantastic , but if their music was not Pop music , then what is ?

Sorry if I have offended you or anyone else on this thread, but I think you have totally misunderstood the point I was trying to make.

I am definitely no music snob mate, if you go to my music thread on the QPR forum and flick through the 890+ pages you will see I am very open minded about music from most styles and from most eras.

Did you bother to watch the video I commented on? I was just agreeing with most of the points being made in it. Two music writers have been responsible for a bulk load of the chart pop music hits going back the last 15 plus years.

It is predominantly manufactured to the same stripped down hit making formula, hence I was making a point that most commercial radio stations play on very heavy rotation the same kind of sounding music. This gets rammed down most people's thoughts, the more diverse and independent music does not get much air time unfortunately.

So yes, I am a snob when it comes to your Simon Cowell types who run the pop music industry but I am no snob when it comes to music in general mate.

One of the giants of music in the 20th century, George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn in 1898.
He was a Classical Composer and Broadway Songwriter and his songs make up much of "the great American songbook", songs that have become standards today.
