Chris Hughton didn't have a reputation as a great tactician. However, on occasion, he would come up with a masterstroke. A great example of this was Arsenal away last season. Tiote manmarked Fabregas, Ameobi dropped into midfield, Barton targetted the keeper and we sent on Ranger late on against the tiring legs. It came together perfectly. Another example was the varying line-ups in the Championship. After getting to know his players, and using a bit of trial and error, Hughton settled on different formations for home and away. Smith sitting infront of the oppositions big man away from home, and Lovenkrands joining Carroll in attack at home.

With Pardew, it seems that he just chucks a team together. Who in their right mind would play Ryan Taylor, a mediocre right-footed wingback, at left back up against Walcott and Gervinho. Also, Ba and Ameobi upfront when he plans to play 'a passing game'. It wouldn't surprise me to see Tiote man-marking Cattermole (who offers little going forward) and Sessegnon left free to roam around Colo and Saylor at will.

What's worse is Pardew's interview after the Arsenal game. He claimed it was a good game with both teams trying to win it. A 0-0 with 2 shots on target all game? And I'm sorry but I wouldn't know if we were trying to win the game, as we hardly touched the ball!

well in fairness Raylor did alright. Certainly better than i'd expect Perch (the only alternative) to do. But overall i agree, Pardews tactical ideas leave a bit to be desired

i love the negativity that comes off the back of us getting a draw against arsenal... in the first game of the season...

I'm happy with a draw against Arsenal. I'm not happy with watching us not touch the ball for 90 minutes because the tactics aren't up to much.

To be fair who else was he going to play? Perch? Raylor did ok (apart from when people ran at him) and there was no one else to play? Who would you have played like? I agree with the rest though.

I understand your point but that's the point, we didn't put up a fight at all. The team was set up to not have the ball. I may be happier with Pardew's team once he has picked his team for the derby. And the result ofcourse ;)

I'm not too sure in all honesty, I still want to know what's happened to Kadar? That game wouldve been perfect for him.

In fairness i thing he tried to bully them with the 2 big forwards. Give him credit he switched it to 5 in the midfield at half time (didn't he? I cant remember)

He wasn't too bad against Arsenal, he brought on Obertan to add some pace and that gave us a few chances to score, can't remember the other subs though

Maybe I am being a bit harsh considering our lack of options. Lovenkrands on for Cabaye was the right kind of substition but Loven simply isn't good enough.

I'll be honest I was stunned to see Ba come off instead of Shola. He doesn't seem to be the most aware individual I'll agree there, every time I see we have a substitution I start biting my nails out of fear he's bringing the best player off and leaving Shola on. Anyway, enough Shola bashing from me, because it's his big day tomorrow.
