What? You do realise that since 2010 this Tory Govt has increased our national debt by over £700BN don't you? Labour increased it by £550BN over 13 years, with the bulk of that being the bank bailouts after the '08 Worldwide crash.

It's a complete fallacy to blame the previous Labour administration for the ill conceived and disgustingly administered 'austerity' of this shower.

I know let's reduce the top rate of tax by 5% and reduce the 'burden' of inheritance tax by £1BN which will benefit about 26,000 well off families, whilst at the same time squeezing the life out of the poorest segment of our society and taxing their spare bedroom........ppppffftttt.

Because in the private sector there was a great deal of tightening of the access to finance. The banks were ordered to greatly increase their own reserves. Many companies had their credit limits reduced or overdrafts removed altogether.

As far as I know the decision to vote for Brexit by the majority was not for financial reasons. It was to, reclaim border control, sovereignty and to stop sending large amounts of cash to Brussels. I've never heard anyone claim Brexit would produce an immediate financial boost. I would however expect the UK to benefit long term by having a more open relationship trading with the rest of the World.

Peter Bone, a Brexit supporter, told Sky: “Any divorce bill would be too much for me ... If you ask my constituents, in Wellingborough we want an urgent care centre. We’ve been campaigning for years, and it’s a few million pounds. And we are told there is not enough money for that.

So just a few million pounds. The government just wasted £140m on an unneeded election to pander to someones ego. The result has left the PM seriously weakened, so any agreement she might come to has to be in doubt seeing as she could be toppled from her job any day. Judging by the leaks that are coming out of her speech today, why spend money to go there?, it has been cobbled together to keep the warring members of her cabinet apart. This is no way to run a country, and to have a distorted view of how the rest of the world is coming together with trade between large blocks, can only worsen matters. The world has moved on and the UK is in huge danger of talking itself back into the 1950s.

Brexit means Brexit though. And it won't be any kind of Brexit, it will be a red, white and blue Brexit.

Possibly confirmed by the BMG Research poll out today - the result mirrors the 2016 referendum one 52:48 in favour of staying...

Peter Bone has every chance of getting his wish. The chances are now that no deal deal is done and there will not be a divorce bill. The sooner the PM accepts that the better. Having lived near Wellingborough a few years ago it is in need of investment, the town is really naff, lots of very poor people.

Corbyn is now ahead of May in the polls too.

All we need is a few more BoJo interventions...

The entire premise of the 'divorce bill' is utter nonsense though. What we will have to pay is what we've signed up for, which is the current 7 year budget cycle that runs until 2020. Anything over and above that is a matter for the lawyers in terms of long term commitments to pension funds etc which will be potentially subjective as opposed to legally definitive, and ultimately it'll come down to what goodwill we think that it's worth. Flouncing off and paying sod all isn't a legal option.

Farage and co will still be raking in their EU money, without even a hint of irony.

£250k a year and he barely turns up, and when he does it's just to insult the entire institution.

If he had any self respect he'd have resigned after the referendum.

No, but it's the sort of thing they (Tories) would do.

And in my mind it would set a precedent - why should I, or anyone else, have to pay what I have contracted to pay?

The UK taxpayer will be footing the bill until the weasel dies.

Guess we won't be running away from that commitment...

The HoL's cross bench committee who fully researched this totally disagreed with your legal assumption on Brexit. It may be worth paying something but that is purely paying for goodwill.

I know, and the EU completely disagreed with their legal standpoint, as they see the UK as being legally committed to the current budget cycle.
