It's because the Kick It Out campaign have picked it up. There's no organisation been formed yet to put a stop to disrespecting of tragedies.

I think it is about whether it is factual and whether the group welcomes that label.

If you say that the chinese are short (er) and the scandinavians are tall (er). This can hardly be called stereotyping as it is a fact. Just as saying that north Indian people are fairer (lighter skinned) than south Indians.

If a group is labelled as intelligent, they are not going to be offended. But if it is labelled as "astute or sly" that could be viewed as negative stereotyping and therefore potentially racist.

Agreed, but the stereotyping of chinese are shorter is racist in our current society didn't ya know that :p as stereotyping (especially negative traits) is a bad thing.

I've no issue with it myself personally as it's true as a general thing

It's not really my place to tell people what they should or shouldn't be upset about, and I know it depends on personal experience much of the time - but in my opinion, unless it's derogatory, it's no big deal. I haven't noticed this chant, and obviously it's a racial stereotype, but it's hardly insulting to a man to say he's got a big knob.
I would draw a distinction between a racial stereotype and a racist insult. The former, though dangerous to draw conclusions upon, is not hate-based - whereas the latter is, and should rightly be condemned. Is "White Men Can't Jump" racist, btw?
If someone mocks me for being a "thieving Scouser", it doesn't bother me if it's done the right way, and is obviously good-natured. If someone wants to seriously judge me on my origins and condemn me on that basis without knowing me then it's an entirely different matter.

This whole issue is such a minefield.

If I say "the koreans are short" this is not racist. But if it is in a chant e.g in a Spurs match " Son, Son he is korean and he is short la la la.." that is potentially racist !

I think on the whole you just have to be careful. Amongst friends, we have a few different ethnicities and we all take the piss and to external people we'd prob look like a right bunch of racists, but it's all in good nature and everyone knows it's not meant so it's all fine.

But would never say that to a stranger just because you don't know how offended they would be.

Its always tricky as part of the majority to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes. I'm laid back and easy going for so would like to think would take it on chin if people threw comments at me bit then I'm a white man living in South East England so as far from a minority as likely to see!

Well, as a jest it's pretty lame - so I just find it a bit pathetic rather than offensive. As a Scouser I expect people to have a bit more wit than that.
I do tend to think that something is offensive only if it's intended to be, but I know that's subjective, and some people are sensitive to certain things that I probably wouldn't be.

It is racist. We tend to think these things are only racist if they are derogatory - that's not true. Racism is about any generalisation of a race, good, bad or indifferent. We are all racist to some degree. I studied race and racism for my MA. I was shocked the first time the lecturer said we are all racist. I went on to study it in depth and now, to me, it's just a statement of fact.

Generally speaking when one person accuses another of being a racist it is always in the negative context and usually for being verbally abusive, but we are all racist in varying degrees. 'White men can't jump' is racist also a good film <ok>

It's really the fact that it's not just a stereotype but historically part of a very negative stereotype from our friends the yanks. It was based on stories and published propaganda around how black men were sexual predators with oversized penises that they'd use to rape white women. Over time all but the black men have big knobs has been dropped and quite often embraced as a joke even in black comedy culture.

Which leads to another question. If a counter culture develops does it make the original or part of the original ok?

Example.. . The racist idea of of an ethnic minority "all looking the same to me".

You'll never hear this joke from a white person now but I've seen it used in comedies by black and Asian characters. Obviously it's funny not because it's true but because it's a counter play on the original racist claim.

With regards to the " thieving Scouser " thing, a lot of people from here have made lots of money adding to the stereotypical crap down the year(particularly the Thatcher years) and ****ed off to London etc to live off it, and yeah the Tory hacks in the press etc have played their part too, I agree and have shared the "jokes" about scousers out of town and abroad because it was done in jest by People I know, it's the brainwashed brigade that have never been here and who are blind to the crime, depravation and poverty where they live themselves that do my head in.

As for the "penis" issue, is it not racist against white men that their genitals are perceived as smaller?, Personally I strap mine to my leg because of the enormous bulge in my pants, problem is, when I get aroused my leg goes up.:bandit:

Disagree. A racist is someone who using it in a derogatory way. Saying a race is short isn't derogatory. It's stereotyping sure, but who says being short is worse?
