Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, 28, says there was an "argument" for moving to Manchester United and becoming the team's biggest star but he stayed at the Bernabeu as "the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies". (Daily Mail) According to Bale, if he'd gone to United he would have been their greatest star, but he chose to stay at Real as he wanted to look back on his career having won trophies. I doubt anyone has been more damning of United than this. Do you lads agree? And is Bale right? I think he is.
As for Bale....I think he is right in the grand scheme of things...he will win more in Spain....but I don't think it's a big deal winning La Liga...not many teams in it. Everyone wants a trophy, no one wants to be a hero...football has no soul
Back when money was less of an issue and football had soul it was much harder to 'move to a big club to win trophies' because the big clubs didn't actually win that many as the standard was more level. So it was better to try to be a hero at one club than push for a move.
Certainly prior to 1970 this was generally true but to suggest this gave football more soul is somewhat doubtful. Question: Do you think Spurs are stuck in some pre 70's time warp?
I used to think of Bale as a diving nancy with more show than substance (and freakishly large nipples for a man). However, I now have a newfound respect for him. He is truly a Yoda of our time and place. A true man of wisdom... And freakishly large nipples.
