From what I have heard today, there are many Tory MPs who are not happy with the bill in front of them. They will support the government tonight , but are wanting considerable changes and will not support it in future without change.
I find it hard to believe how many Tories are standing up saying this bill is bad and will have to be amended, but then say they will vote for it.
Quite simple really, like Caroline Flint and Frank Field they are listening to their constituents and more importantly taking notice of the result of the referendum.
Well Caroline Flint has changed her tune rather saying she will now abstain rather than vote with the government. It is nothing to do with how the public voted any longer but how you exit the EU. Clearly Tories are not happy with what is proposed. Charlie Elphicke the MP for Dover has just said that the country must be ready for even a no deal option. He mentioned the lorry build up and chaos at the port and said the country must be ready. Have you noticed any infrastructure being put in place to deal with that? He hoped that something would happen, but didn't mentioned that nothing has yet started. What is clear from both sides of the house is that this legislation has serious flaws. Some are saying they will amend it later, while others say it should be taken away, rewritten, and brought back again in October. It will no doubt get through tonight, but what it will look like after it has been amended by all MPs is any ones guess.
Agreed. Not that the owners of the scum, express, fail, nazigraph etc., ever stooped so low! At best they have given a one dimensional view. Alas no one is coming out unscathed and the more liberal and left leaning press are guilty of some exaggeration but offer a more rounded view. But that brings us back to degrees of wrongness as I've mentioned before. To use an analogy by Asimov: “When people thought the Earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together”
The government's easy victory in The Withdrawal Bill last night was secured because of the refusal of 20 Labour MPs to follow instructions from the leaders. No wonder the Labour Party are being labelled Heinz 57 due to their large number of varying positions regarding Brexit. They are completely split but Corbyn cannot complain too much about the dissenters as he made a personal career doing just that. Frank Field said he was 'on the side of the majority of people who voted to come out". His colleague, Caroline Flint who abstained said 'the legislation was necessary and she wanted it to continue". She also commented that 'blocking the legislation would be to thwart Brexit'. The dissenters obviously prioritised the outcome of the democratic referendum rather than the dithering opportunistic approach from Labour HQ.
Maybe I'm doing him a disservice, perhaps after all this time he has finally realised it is best to vote with the Conservatives for the sake of the country. Good on him.
The repeal bill vote has precisely nothing to do with the referendum result. The objections to it are based on the opportunist power grab of the Tories, and it needs amendments to ensure that the medieval statute that they've dredged up to take parliamentary power and scrutiny away from the House doesn't lead to abuse when they're re-writing virtually our entire statute. The Labour MP's who voted with the Tories were guilty of an act of political cowardice, frightened that the populous would misconstrue the objection to the bill as some form of going against the 'will of the people'. They were basically pandering to the stupid.
You should listen to the experienced Labour MP Frank Skinner. Speaking ahead of tonight’s vote, Mr Field said he will defy the Labour leader because he is "on the side of the majority of people who voted to come out". The senior Labour MP said: “Tonight I will be voting for the only option for the referendum result to be implemented. That was the wish of my constituents and that was the wish of the country. “I’m on the side of the majority of the people, who voted to come out.” This was just another failed attempt at delaying or reversing the decision of the referendum. Thankfully most MPs respect the democratic process in the UK so will continue to do as the public demanded by that result.
He was playing to the audience of idiots who are seemingly too stupid to differentiate between an objection to the 'free hand' the Tories are trying to give themselves and them trying to be able to completely circumvent our parliamentary democracy at their discretion...............and the result of the poxy referendum The repeal bill vote was nothing to do with the fact that we're leaving the EU and solely to do with how this Govt will be able to manipulate the statute before and post our exit. Taking back control.............and giving it to a handful of Tories who can undermine the sovereignty of our parliamentary democracy as they see fit.............oh the ****ing irony..........
The title of the bill should give you a clue. The EU Withdrawal Bill. This is part of the process of leaving the EU as demanded by the UK electorate. It has everything to do with the referendum.
No, it really ****ing doesn't It's not about the FACT that we're leaving the EU, it's about how our statute will look post our exit. What this Bill does it to allow the Tories carte blanche to amend said statute without parliamentary scrutiny. Anyone who thinks this bill is somehow about whether we're leaving the EU or not, is an absolute dolt.
This is not about grabbing more power for government it is getting an incredibly large amount of EU laws onto the UK's statute book. Anything controversial can be debated in the normal way. Most of the objections are red herrings purely designed to obstruct the government of the day.
Tobes, You'll get more joy trying to convince an orange45 supporter of the legitimacy of climate change science...
