One of my geekier avenues is as a supporter for the campaign for dark skies. There are some good initiatives from some local councils to do what yours are doing and switch street lights off during the middle of the night when 95% of people are in bed. Not only does it save a ton of cash, but it allows people to see the stars and the night sky.

Also things that help are putting down lighters and shields on street lamps helps so that the light is directed down where it's needed and not up into the sky. Stopping the mass illumination of buildings with those huge uplighters and reducing the use of those poxy security lights that people put on their houses that come on every time a cat walks past.

There are very few places left in the UK where you can see a truly dark sky at night. I'm lucky that I live in one of those places. Seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye with no light pollution around is one of the true wonders of the world.

We have the more modern street lights as well with down lighters . Until they were installed I never realised how much light pollution there was .

I spent a lot of my life in the middle of Southampton , when I met Mrs Jasper , she went on about seeing the sky at night ( Sky as in the stuff above us , Not as in the Liverpool fan )

Thought she was mad , but it is , in fact , fantastic :)

And don't start me on those bloody security lights <steam>

Another idea in the pipeline is to have sensors on streetlights on motorways so that they only come on when there is traffic. A lot of it is driven by cost as it costs a fortune to light up roads and cities every night of the year. But a great by product is that people get to enjoy the night sky.

Those poxy security lights should be banned. ****ers are putting them up everywhere and they basically do **** all for security. They are like car alarms, people just ignore them.
