Now who's moving the goalposts? If you want to bleat about the right and wrong era, why are you using an example from over twenty years ago as if it's relevant today? But if you want to play that game... Between 1992-7, which is the same era as Shearer, Giuseppe Signori scored 107 goals in 152 games for Lazio. Any Lazio fan would tell you that he was a great (after the traditional Lazio fan greeting of a gang of them giving you a shoeing and stealing your wallet...) - but wait a minute, what's this? ALL of the best strikers win trophies for their teams. Even Shearer won a PL trophy before chasing his little dream. Oh well, as he never won a trophy for the club, I guess he was bang average in spite of having a ridiculously good scoring record against Serie A defences for several seasons because somebody who never graduated from the finger painting table said so on Not606. Here's another example of the obvious flaw in your original comment that you're stubbornly trying to defend in spite of how anyone with an iota of common sense can see the numerous flaws in it from several away... Craig Bellamy's record at Liverpool: 51 games, 13 goals, 2 trophies Andy Carroll's record at Liverpool: 44 games, 6 goals, 1 trophy Fernando Torres's record at Liverpool: 102 games, 65 goals, 0 trophies Just accept your argument is what it is: ****ing dumb.
Kane's got a long way to go before he can be compared to Greaves, Charlton, Channon, Lineker, Shearer or Owen. But I see no reason why he should have to leave Spurs to acheive that status, really. I doubt they'll win the league as long as I've got a hole in my arse, but so what? As long as he keeps scoring goals at every level including in Europe and as an international, he'll be closing in on those guys. It's obvious he's no flash in the pan.
What was the 'pathetic claim' ... as far as I can see the only claim was that if Harrold is to become England's greatest striker he has to perform at major tournaments ... not sure what is pathetic about that? ... perhaps we should all just concede that he will no doubt become England's greatest striker because he plays for Spurs? I remember Lineker's impact in the World Cup in 1986 - England were going out at the group stage until Bobby Robson was forced to change the team and tactics because of Bryan Robson's dislocated shoulder and Ray Wilkins sending off. In came Beardsly and Lineker and had an immediate impact - indeed Lineker was fairly prolific at major tournaments. Shearer had the same kind of immediate impact. Harry was worse than anonymous in France last summer - let's face it he was pants - but we aren't allowed to mention that unless it ruffles the sensibilities of the Spurs fans on here ... ah bless .
Even though this thread is a classic HIAG thread and has descended into something semi serious, i think the point tel is saying that people won't recognise him as the best if he doesn't at least win a major trophy. Just as Messi probably cannot lay claim unanimously to be the best player their ever was unless he wins an international trophy (he certainly won't be accepted as such) and he's won plenty. Harry Kane can't be one of the greatest strikers without winning a medal. He's got a great goalscoring record but so does Darren Bent If you ask fans who was the greatest strikers in Italy during that period, Signori probably isn't in that list, you'd get your Van Bastens, your Baggios and your Bastistutas
Kane will move on for more money and the chance to win trophies. Kane then may reach his full potential but as we all know one injury can **** up a career. If Kane is so good why haven't Spurs won anything ?
And as I pointed out (several times) the point is missing countless examples that prove just how stupid that argument is - just like it's stupid when the Robbie Savages of the world say Lionel Messi will never be considered a great until he wins a World Cup while patently ignoring the fact that Cruyff, van Basten, Platini, Zico and countless others are considered greats even though they never won a World Cup, let alone how the likes of Best and Weah are considered greats in spite of never even playing in a World Cup, let alone winning one. Or I could just play the most obvious card there is to prove how broken the logic of the argument is: Matt Le Tissier didn't win a single trophy in his career, yet is considered a great of modern English football and has a spot in the English Football Hall of Fame. That's why tying medals to quality makes no sense whatsoever, because there's a long list of players who shatter the logic the second somebody brings them up. Grow up.
That's twice this week you have got a 'like' from Mr Marks for your comment Sums up your week brother
But who says he's the greatest? Darent Bent? Have you actually watched Darren Bent and/or Harry Kane? There's a lot more going on than putting the ball in the back of the net...he's a sublime footballer. All I see is desperate claims to discredit his obvious talent. I suppose if Bobby and Fosse were top flight managers when Alan Shearer was at his pomp..you 2 would have been chasing Pierre Vin Hoojidonk or whatever he was called at Celtic whilst all the top managers wanted Shearer.
Messi is considered a great. Just not the greatest unanimously especially when you consider he hasn't done it on the big stage. Theres been loads of great strikers and to separate out the ones that are the best, trophies add to this weight. Someone like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was a great striker, scored loads of stunning goals but won't get mentioned in the same breath as someone like Diego Costa or Ruud Van Nistelrooy because he won jackshit in his Career
I don't make the rules. When you mention great strikers around the world, apart from PL fans, not sure many people mention Harry Kane. He's barely Englands main Striker. Anyway you are getting well to wound up about this Mr spurlock
I don't need a degree or mass hysteria to know who is a good playa or not or a top playa with massive potential. Harry Kane is a top footballer hence why on the one hand he gets criticised constantly and on the other hand the same folk are trying to flog him off every week. Would you have him in your team? Yup Would Fosse sell his own arse to have Harry at Lesta? Yup Far from wound up Bobby....just rolling a zoot then starting on a Bombay potato bruh Bobby would buy Okazaki instead of Kane
You've got nothing to be defensive about with that shower of ****e you watch on a weekly basis that's why, no one cares. Pool have been asset stripping you for the last 4 years and it's no coincidence your fan base can't stand them..gets it?
