I won't be booing any time soon. Because he won't be playing any time soon. Once he gets his thick head around what a contract is (which may take some time) he needs to re-earn his place. I'm proud of les and the board.

Were I MP, I'd be picking him just as soon as his fitness & effort levels reach normal. He's a twat, but a very good player, and this is a results driven industry.

And hopefully bring some added harmony into the changing room too. (bolded the "added" to make the point that I am in anyway suggesting its not good at the moment - see this as a plus all round).

    http://www.skysports.com/watch/vide...3638/want-away-players-have-to-get-on-with-it

Bellamy and Allardyce saying that players who wanted a move and didn't get it (Sanchez, Costa, VVD) have to knuckle down now and play the best they can for their clubs. Allardyce points out that if you perform well a better club could be interested, but if you don't perform well there may be no interest at the end of the season. Sam also says it's up to the Captain to have a word with these players....so Virgil will have to give himself a real good talking to <laugh>

And should Virgil be the captain anyway...presumably not. Make Davis the club captain and on field captain....or perhaps Maya could be on-field captain. The problem with Maya is that the captain should be someone assured of a place most games, so they may go for Forster.

Why do you think he owes us just out of interest?

I think that he does because the club brought him into the PL and helped him to get through a long term injury.

Not sure about the "brought to the PL" bit, but I agree about the injury.

You could counter argue it and say we owe Virgil to let him move on after he performed so well for us, but I doubt many/any would agree.

He signed a long term contract with a significant pay increase and was made Captain. Now nobody expects him to see out his full contract, but he should stay at least for 2 years of it. He has shown the club and the fans zero respect with the way he has acted, especially after just having a 6 month lay off.

Liverpool were never going to buy him while he was at Celtic, so we have helped him to showcase his talents in the PL.

He was an idiot for signing that deal without assurances/clauses that allowed him to leave if a bigger team came in for him. His actions over the summer are exactly what I would expect from a player wanting to leave. I think we would've seen exactly the same things unfold with the other players we have sold in the past if we hadn't agreed to let them go. The key difference between the others and VVD is the contract situation which is why I can't get my head around why he signed the deal. What was he on before? Something like £40/50k a week? Now apparently on £80k, which is still peanuts compared to what he could earn at somewhere like Liverpool, so he has screwed himself over.

The only thing I can think of why he would sign that deal was that there was no indication at all that the bigger teams were interested in him, which seems unlikely.

Now the window is shut I fully expect him to do a Wanyama/Schneiderlin and give us one more season playing well then go through the whole thing again next summer, whether the board stands firm again remains to be seen. One thing I am slightly wary of next summer though is that I can see there being interest in Cedric and Romeu aswell as VVD and possibly Bertrand, and with a year off of all their contracts then we could be faced with a similar scenario to 2014 when we lost a lot of players. But hey, no point worrying about that just yet.

I don't think that it's next year we need to worry, but the year after, we might. Hopefully we will get the important players to sign extra years as we go, as in the case of Forster.

The key difference is (and why I mentioned about there being no known interest from the top teams when VVD signed his deal) is that nobody better than us would want Forster. We are a good club that players want to play for, unless one of the top 6/7 want you then they look more attractive. To the Forsters/Yoshidas/Davis' we are the best they can do so they are happy signing the deals, it is the Cedric/Romeu we need to tie down to longer contracts, but I can't see them signing them now because of the VVD thing if there is even a hint of a big team being interested.

It depends surely on the deal being offered VVD was being advised by his then agents. He jumped at the deal because it was good for him at the time. He changed to the other agents because they told him they could get him a deal with scousehampton.
I have a feeling that if scousehampton come a calling in the summer they will get the same respons as before. While it may be true others may bulk at signing knowing Saints possible stance the majority will sign because of the money angle. They will expect to stay at least half way through their contract. Not every one we get will be as naive as VVD. Or I hope not...........
