Alan Pardew thinks his summer transfers are yet to improve Newcastle, as he seeks a left-back and a striker.

The St James' Park boss has brought in Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux, Yohan Cabaye, Mehdi Abeid and Gabriel Obertan this summer, but he still wants two more.

Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique are among the key players to have left this summer and, ahead of Saturday's Wear-Tyne derby at Sunderland, Pardew does not think his incoming signings have made Newcastle 'stronger' than last season.

Amid reported interest in PSV Eindhoven's Erik Pieters, Aly Cissokho of Lyon, Manchester City's Wayne Bridge and Sochaux frontman Modibo Maiga, he therefore hopes for money from club owner Mike Ashley.

"We're trying to make sure this club is stronger than it was last year," said Pardew in the Daily Mirror.

"As it stands, when we started the season, I'd say we're not at that position yet. But hopefully we will be. I don't think I need to nudge Mike any more - I've nudged him enough."

"The critical factor here is that we get the right two players into the group we've got.

"We've got Cabaye, Ba and Mehdi, who is doing very, very well and he might feature this year, and I think Marveaux could be included this week.

"I think the Newcastle public will find they're good buys for this club. And we've still got two more to come. And it all needs to gel.

"Look at Sunderland - is it 10 players they've got? Steve Bruce cannot, cannot hand on heart say that's going to be right and gel yet. He can't. And Nor can I."

Meanwhile, Pardew has risked the wrath of the Football Association by straying onto the subject of discussing match officials after urging Howard Webb not to assume the worst of Joey Barton on Saturday.

The Newcastle manager said: "The referee needs to make sure he referees the game from a completely neutral point of view, because Joey has been in the press a fair bit this week - more than Joey would have liked and more than I would like - and I'm sure he'll get a mention in Sunderland's game plan."

Pardew added: "He's a very, very good player and they'll need to stop him but I've got no qualms about throwing Joey in there, no doubts at all. But the referee will need to be astute."

Ive gave up listening to what Pardew says. My views are just to wait till the transfer window closes and what will be will be. As long as we get behind the players every week, we can't do anything else that will affect the situation at the club!!

He seems really pleased with Mehdi as he's praised him a few times now in the press.

As for the LB and ST. I'm still patient and hoping they come.

I am still hoping they come to. What I fear for is that they will end up being Wayne Bridge and Carlton Cole!!!

I think that is pretty honest assessment of the squad by Pardew. He can't exactly come out and say "well since I've been here we've lost Carroll, Nolan, Jose and we may well lose Joey. That's really hurt us" He just has to roll with the punches and accept the boundaries he has to work within financially. I think if we get the two signings we will go into the rest of the season on parity with last seasons team. The difference being we can't realistically expect to replace a player of Carrolls ability with a similar player. We don't have the money. But I think our midfield is stronger because of the young talent. Happy to wait and I think its clear Pardew feels he's done all he can to get MIke to part with some money. Its down to the board now.

I wasn't really serious when I mentioned those 2 names, its just an example of the underwhelming signings that may appear.

No its not ideal and I think they've dragged their feet on both fronts. Particularly holding out for Jose. But it was it is and moaning about isn't going to change anything. We need to just get behind whoever fills those slots in the short term and hope for the best. Our current strikers need all the help they can get afterall.

Pardew talks a bit too much, yes some of what he's got to say is of interest but half the time he just repeats himself or says "we hope to do...", "we're looking at lots of players", "we've made enquiries but it wouldn't be professional to name names", "agents make it difficult" etc etc. I'd rather hear actual facts or things with solid foundations once or twice a week than complete rubbish 20 times per week.

Think he's done a decent enough job, just get on with the business rather than spouting tripe all the time. I think Sunderland have gone quantity over quality for the most part, I'm glad we're looking to add 'the right players' rather than 'any player'. Patience is the order of the day, well more the order of the remaing week and a bit of the transfer window. I'm confident we'll land a good LB (i.e. not Bridge) and a decent enough stiker (better than what we have).

Fantastic considering the rest of the sentence suggests he's not going to get much 1st team action this season.
