One of the most irritating things to come out of it is the assumption from other fans that we would've sold him if a decent enough bid came in for him. We were never going to sell him in this window and particularly not to Liverpool.

He has been one of the hottest properties in English football for over a year and to say that there was no interest in him just because there was no official bid is plainly wrong IMO.

What players may learn from the vvd situation is to insist on very short contracts, fulfil them and then sign for the club that offers them the biggest signing on fee - which could be their existing club. That works out cheaper for the purchasing club but the 'selling' club does not get the benefit of the transfer fee.

 

Good plan until they suffer a long-term injury. Then their goose is well and truly cooked. What club would try to get them fit again if their contract is short and they will clearly leave when fit? What club would extend their contract when they are injured? What club would buy an injured player?

Long contracts do have a benefit for players. It's when players see it as a one-way deal that trouble starts.

Agree with this, atm players are trying to have their cake and eat it. A possible solution is release clauses where if a player insists on a small release clause in the clubs eyes then it impacts how much their weekly wage is.

 

All the talk about songs and whether to boo or not to boo a player in a Saints' shirt. How about just singing, 'We've got Les Reed, we've got Les Reed.' Has the double effect of making a point and recognising our much maligned Director of Football.

Some ITK has said he is still fuming and training on his own. A wiser person on Saintsweb pointed out that he is not fuming, he is sulking. Of course another ITK said he had been given a short break before returning to training. Do you think there are two Virgil Van Dykes?

Minor update.

He has been training and training well, on his own everyday since deadline day.

He is still fuming.

Don't expect him back with the 1st team anytime soon.

 

Their credibility has fallen as fast as West Ham fans opinion of Fonte.

 

I note that some Liverpool fans are consoling themselves with the thought that we received no offers so our resolve was never tested.....unlike their determination with Coutinho. I think formal offers for Coutinho and not Virgil suggest that Les Reed is more scary than Klopp.

 

This is good news, now I may never respect Virgil again for the way that he has behaved over the past few weeks, but if he is fit, motivated and willing to offer his services, then that can only be a huge positive for us this season.
