Good morning, Dave; good morning, all. Finally finished my full lawnmower service yesterday. I've been watching masses of youtube videos and buying odds and sods throughout the summer. I baulked at the service cost locally and researched that the usual methods are not ideal for the machine. It's a beautiful old cylinder mower and after the engine strip, clean and rebuild, oil and petrol change, yesterday I backlapped the cylinder blades. 200ml of backlapping compound from Wickes was about £20. I bought 5kg online from a specialist grass care firm for £50! Painted it on as I ran the cylinder backwards with a good variable speed electric drill and the appropriate large socket and adaptor for the cylinder nut (which cost me a tenner between them rather than £30 for a backlapping machine but it's identical in effect). Loud noise gets quieter as the blades get sharp. Not the unnecessary and machine-ageing grinding most servicers would do. It cut so amazingly after that. It's a 10 blade cylinder rather than more conventional 6, more suited to golf greens. I was testing it and it left the areas I did close, beautifully rolled, cut smooth as a baby's arse. Not that I would recommend using it for that - at the very least seek professional medical advice. So, a happy grass nerd (I do all the weeding, feeding, watering, levelling, reseeding) has a very exciting morning lined up (excuse the pun). Then the boys will go out, play football on it and generally tear it up. This gives me ample reason and opportunity to go out, sigh, shake my head quietly and start the care process again. They wrecked it so much this year I even let them play petanque on it! As Head Greenkeeper I should review that policy but then I get a strip torn off me by the Head of the Club Committee (she can be a fierce one) and I don't want to upset her as there are Lady Chatterleyesque 'fringe benefits' in keeping her happy, so to speak.
I wasn't, I'm afraid. But beautiful photographs to drool over. The backgrounds are superb. Love the music, great story, fab photos. As a little perspective for those greybacks (and heads) among us, when I pointed out the ground in the photos to a young little personage just now, the reply came: "Nice. Can we see the actual footage though?"
You seem to have a predilection for backlapping. I'm not going to be the one to show his ignorance by asking what the heck it is though...
Not me - I was only 7 and wasn't allowed at evening kick-offs until the following season when we had season tickets in the new Family Enclosure. It's raining here after a nice dry day yesterday.
Run the blade cylinder backwards and the compound (which is a light, water-based gunk with a bit of very fine sand in it) is painted on to the blades which sharpens the blades (cylinder and bottom blades) gently and brilliantly. Take it to a grinders for £42.50 + VAT and they'll remove a millimetre or so of each cylinder blade. Totally OTT and obviously there's only so many times you can do that before you need a new cylinder (mine are £250-300). I can backlap for the rest of my life and probably whichever son is lucky enough to inherit the Atco.
I was there in the Vicarage Road end. I was also fortunately able to discuss the game again with GT a couple of years ago. This was definitely the most amazing game I have ever seen live. I was sadly in France for the 'DEEEEENEY' game.
Kids today - they don't know they're born... I remember heading up north by train a few days after the game - in the buffet car I struck up conversation with a guy about football, as you do - he insisted that he had seen all the goals on tv. I couldn't get him to believe me that there had been no cameras at the match.
They did not think it was worth it as they had totally out played us in the !st leg 4-0 .They rested Kevin Kegan (they said he was injured so he could not play)
Morning all. A very good morning here for getting out and doing things. I have some fallen ash that is worth logging for the months ahead. Now that we are in September I am allowed to have a bonfire again, but everywhere is too dry to it with safety. A lot of what I want to burn is brambles that I have cut or dug up, but they will have to wait for some rain. Yes I was at the game. Had been down to Southampton and being ever hopeful went to the second leg. Somehow in those days you believed that anything could happen.
Hope every one is having / has had a good weekend. Got a Shepherd´s pie in the oven, the first time we´ll have it in a while! Then some red to uncork. The international break and transfer nonsense makes the start of the season seem a bit dis-organised. Thankfully this weekend things get back to normal.
I have been here a week and not had any Watford games but i got my Southampton and Man city tickets. We dont expect many points from the next 4 games the Grim reaper will be there .Unless someone pours beer down his neck all day, Is that a collection starting .Its great to have points in the bag.
Hope you catch up on things that side of the pond you can´t get. I have 7 different patak´s sauces, custard powder and gravy cubes from visitors recently, so apart from a decent ale I should be ok for a while! But always good to go back to the shire and enjoy what you´ve missed. Oh, to be able to watch a game live...
