I don't think anything Ike this will really prevent players joining us.

 

We will make him give us 1 years good service, then sell. The longer he aggitates the longer he should be made to wait.
I'm happy to not see him in a shirt anytime soon.

 

About a week ago I had a few drinks with Jason Roberts and terry Fenwick out here in trinidad...Roberts realised is was a saints supporter after giving Fenwick some lip about managing Pompey..... They both asked my take on the VVD saga ,while taking into consideration the amount of unknown players we must let go or sell on to lower leagues.
Putting myself in VVD's boots I agreed that a year ago I also would have signed a new contract with a lovely pay increase and also agreed that the possible multimillion payday that comes with a move to Liverpool would have been way to good to turn down........as a fan whether he stayed or went it did not both me, as long as saints got their asking price.....either way I was happy.....he is still our player, the club we support has made a stand ,it's up to VVD to once again perform on the pitch to warrant the interest of the perceived big clubs,why he would settle for Liverpool has to be a personal decision.I honestly think we have him for at least another season and we should support him while he is ours.

Never worried about the majority. When you're right you're right! Don't get me wrong, I think we've done a good thing for football I'm just not so sure it's good for Southampton. If it had been a simple request that was denied then great but the protracted it has played out........well, we'll see.

Because, are we really sending out a message, in which case we don't sell him (until he only has a year left) or are we sending out half a message, that says you can mess with us, you've just got to wait a bit?

 

I think we're sending the message that the club does business on its own terms and not whenever players want it to. I wouldn't be that surprised if van Dijk went next summer because the club seem to be comfortable replacing one CB at a time. Long way to go until we get there though.

We couldn't capitulate to VVD's agitation (he's got FIVE years left on his contract ffs), what sort of message would that be if we just caved in?, others would just do the same. The board HAD to make a stand this time for the good of the future growth of the club. Players will now understand that if they are under a long contract they have to honour it.
It won't stop young talent from joining our club as they will still want to play in the PL (top clubs just don't take a chance on signing them) and the more chance of being successful makes us an attractive proposition too.

In my mind I had them down as different football generations.

LFC have to realise that the SFC transport cafe is closed for business....PERMANENTLY!...

 

I wouldn't go that far, the TV money gave clubs some power as they all had a healthy bank balance and simply didn't need the additional income from sales. At some point that will be looked at again and players will go for the right price. I don't think that January will be that time but come next Summer owners will start looking at the business side of things again.
