We had lots of promises from people who were ITK but could not say anything on the VVD saga until post deadline day. Apparently the beans were going to be spilled about what hassle VVD had caused. Well its post deadline day and we are waiting to hear all.......

 

Well they want a mix so they can't all be like Merson. You have to have some pundits capable of stringing a sentence together!

Exactly, he is bound to have used tactics designed to agitate for a move under advice from his agent. That is normal in this climate of "player power". I fully expect a change of attitude now from the player as he needs to act in the best interests of his future career.

 

Also The Scouse Scum will be spending £75m on someone who has yet played or even properly trained for the best part of a year.

 

Maybe you don't read enough. True Merson is barely literate but I think he sums up the VVD situation well enough. Even if he turns out to be wrong it's a reasonable position.

 

I hope we don't scrutinise him like that. He's going to make mistakes but that won't mean he's not putting in the effort. It's about the all round performances.

Merson certainly doesn't read enough. If he did he'd know that Saints position to deny Liverpool the acquisition of VVD was nothing to do with Liverpool themselves. It is the developed policy not to allow players to leave when we want to keep them. Why on earth would Saints encumber themselves with such long contracts otherwise.?

I have said this enough times, in previous exodus seasons, that Saints will never be allowed to progress until they have discovered a way to stop their preciously researched acquisitions and academy graduates from leaving. Well, according to them, they have found a way. It just so happened that Liverpool were the club, and VVD was the player, that got the highlight when that policy was tested. There is nothing personal in it. It is merely coincidental. Which means that Merson's position is invalid and certainly not reasonable.

Ok, so his last sentence should have said, "Anyone" rather than "Liverpool" but that apart I don't see how we've achieved anything other than a moral victory. Maybe that is enough.

Perhaps it's the biggest achievement of all... being able to hold on to a player under extreme pressure to sell is a massive statement to the rest of football that we are a club to be respected, we have ambition to grow and not just be cannon fodder to feed the percieved "elite" clubs. It is a knock on effect, players state our lack of ambition when they want to leave, so how can we prove our ambition other than keeping hold of our top players?
This is an important turning point for the club and we as fans should be excited about the implications of our actions during this transfer window.

I agree we need a CB it didn't have to be VVD and what's to say January will be any different?

 

All of which makes sense providing he plays to the top of his form for the rest of the season. Also, what happens next summer when he still has a couple of years on his contract. Are we going to do the same again? Because then we are sending out another message to potential new recruits and might actually prevent come players coming here in the first place.
