The Virgil Van Dijk Stays at Southampton Thread

I'll informed biggest pile of **** too. Which still surprises me of pundits. All the information is there regarding our board's policy, yet pundits don't seem to be the slightest bothered about trying to obtain accuracy. On the BBC's own Sport/Football/Southampton webpage you can watch Ralph spelling out the policy. It couldn't be clearer.

 

Yeah, it's inevitable. But I will give him every chance. I have never been able to dislike skill, and he's the real deal, so I won't be angry with him for too long. Provided he plays and tries his best, of course.

 

So he's coming to Liverpool in January now.

 

I was watching the cricket the other day and they were talking to Bob Willis about his negative pundit style. He said that when he started, he tried to give praise and encouragement to players. He then went on to say that it was made clear that this approach would mean an extremely short career as a pundit, so he quickly adopted the negative, sometimes rude style he has now.
For me, it's the same with the football pundits. Sky want and need the controversy to keep the viewing figures up.

Heh you wish............think you're going to be disappointed though. I don't think you'll get him in the summer either...........I just think as far as Saints go Scousehampton have burnt their bridges as far as he goes.......

 

Yeah... Probably not. I just hope we get SOMEONE. More disappointed we signed no CBs than didn't sign VvD.

Oh dear you've made quite the mix-up. We play you in February not January so only a few days out. Plus we are at St Mary's so I guess you will be coming to him.

The conduct of Liverpool was utterly unacceptable even in a world where tapping up is part of the process. Bridges probably have been burnt

They had the manager meet with the player in secret with a full dossier on how the team would be built around him. That is simply not allowed and cannot be allowed

On top of these they had the media briefed that he had chosen them all despite not contacting Southampton once.

The disrespect and arrogance was astonishing and it seems like despite being told where to go it is still there given that Liverpool fans have just assumed he is going there in January

 

Although I know he's heavily involved with Salisbury FC. it's probably why Steve Claridge is used very sparingly. He tells it like it is, no more, no less. He was hilarious and brilliant on the Monday Night Club on Radio 5. I have a lot of respect for Steve.

This is the part that makes the least sense. The all or nothing approach. It can result in nothing which was never considered it seems

 

Nope, but i think January will be too late for liverpool's title chances this year anyway. really needed a CB.

He's very fair to Southampton. And he's no Skate. Grew up in Titchfield.

 

This about sums it up. Even back in the 50s and 60s Keith Miller would do the same. Players would confront him about what was in his newspaper column and he'd just say "Oh don't take any notice of that rubbish."

I vaguely know someone who works in TV rights and he's told me before that Sky and co employ the likes of Merson and Redknapp because a lot of their viewers want to watch simplistic opinions they can relate to, and in some (many?) cases they're turned off (intimidated?) by well-informed, erudite pundits.

 

The only way he has to apologise is to start playing as well as he did before
That will confirm he is as good a player as we know he can be

The right words and actions will help to prove he is a good guy too, but meh, if he can't find it in himself to do that then its the football that really counts

Maybe once he's back we can see if he's 'just another decent CB'?

 

That figures. Makes you wonder why they employ Le Tiss though, because he isn't a simplistic blow hard.

Doesn't get much of a look in either. The others all get wound up....he tends to answer when asked a direct question.

 

Yeah, I'm guessing that would count for nothing in reality.
