I get goose bumps listening to , and watching this particular video . Genius . This is simply fantastic ( All IMHO of course )
Never got to see Gabriel with Genesis (bit young for that), but I saw him at Earl's Court in 1986 and it was mesmerising, especially San Jacinto and Kate come on in the encore for Don't Give Up...
John Abercrombie -1944- 2017 - RIP This is an amazingly catchy tune. Always loved his playing and writing too.
I think that the guitarist from the White Stripes knows what he is doing and I have head him cover classic blues material before although never Son House's "Death Letter." It is a shame that his ex-wife was such as **** and unsympathetic drummer. I am staggered that she ever got a gig. The music would have been so better without her.
Tbf, I think Peter Gabriel actually is a bit of a musical genius. Right from Peter Gabriel 1 and putting the stylus on the record to hear Moribund the Burgermeister come bombing out of the speakers. I got his first 5 solo albums straight off, and they all gradually edged themselves away from where he'd been musically before, until there was clear distance. He really pushed himself creatively in the 1980s and 90s and then decided he'd indulge himself a bit. To me, he was the best thing about Genesis and Phil Collins was a pale shadow, who did his level best to fill the gap and, coincidentally, happened to have a similar sounding voice at times. Whenever I listen to PG I wonder why I left it so long in between. He's a proper great: BTW, that's a Lancia Flavia. I always thought it was a Volvo 144.
ELP used to enjoy making the occasional rock anthem from classical pieces. I find them a little dated sounding these days, primarily due to Keith Emerson's organ sound. I never really wholly liked it even though he was a brilliant player. I can still happily listen to a few of them though. Jerusalem is really good, from Brain Salad Surgery. Emerson's sound gets a little more 'church organ', so it's something different:
It's amazing how open to suggestion one can be. I simply moved a few LPs upstairs to my other hi-fi, to play them up there, which revealed the front cover of Blue Moves, by Elton John. This is the album that had Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, as the big single. Unlike a lot of critics at the time, I really liked this album. OK, it's a tad uneven, but I've always felt that there is the odd bum track in an EJ album, but you put up with that because 90% his stuff was always so strong musically, and this one is no different. So of course, the tunes started running through my head. They didn't get far. I stopped at One Horse Town. What a great rocking tune this is, and if I can't get it out of my head, I'll get it into yours too. I'm not even sure it was released as a single:
And, as older viewers may know, this is where those cunning devils at the BBC got the end credits for the old Top Gear. When it was a TV review programme about cars and bikes. Out Of The Blue:
And here's the opening credits to the same format programme. The Allman Brothers and Jessica: It's also featured in the film Field of Dreams [1989], where farmer Ray Kinsella [Kevin Costner] is driving his VW Camper bus to kidnap 1960's writer Terence Mann [James Earl Jones]. Don't ask. It's a long story, but it's a good one.
Happy Birthday to Squeeze Lead Singer/Guitarist and Co-Songwriter, Glenn Tilbrook who is 60 today. He and Chris Difford were once touted as the New Wave Lennon and McCartney with their sophisticated Power Pop songs... Love Glenn's guitar solo on this, he is a very underrated Guitarist....
I've always thought that this song was about Annie Lennox who changed her image from modette to synth music at the time...
Really love Squeeze. Got two albums and should have more. Don't forget Hourglass. What a great pop record: Sorry about the squashed format to the really good video, but it was before widescreen. And they cut it before the song started and finished, which really annoys.
And from their last album and excellent comedy series, starring Peter Kay. Cradle to the Grave: So glad you popped up with Squeeze. They've given me so much pleasure over the years. As you say SA, Glenn Tilbrook was so underrated a guitarist. One bit of Squeeze trivia. [Pulling Mussels lyrics] I've had the distinction of being at both Camber Sands and Waikiki, in my life. Holidayed in one, lived about 20 miles from the other for 5 years. Sadly, it was Camber Sands that I lived close to. But not a bad place to sit on the beach in the wind and rain of a Kent summer.
