I'd agree with you, as I think its two different things being ' better than Lampard' and 'being more effective at scoring goals than Lampard'. Easy to confuse or conflate the two. Lampard wasn't necessarily the all-round midfielder - he just had an amazing knack at scoring goals, and important ones too. Gerrard is a better midfielder/player than Lampard imo, but in that role of scoring via late runs from midfield, no one did it better than Lampard. That's why it was so hard to choose one over the other for England, as no manager would turn down the goals Lampard could score - but nor would any of them contemplate leaving an immense midfielder like Gerrard out. If Lampard didn't score the amount of goals he did, Gerrard would have always got the nod imo (ie. if you remove the goals from both, and compare them on all other facets of midfield play).

 

Basically, no they didn't - or your first sentence wouldn't exist...

This is exactly where Sven G.E. went wrong - he should have made his choice between the industry of Gerrard or the artistry of Lampard, and stuck with it.

To be fair, both players scored plenty of goals in their career. But to my mind Gerrard thrived best in a Liverpool side that was built around him. That's maybe why his impact for England was less than it was for his club. Lampard would have got the nod from me, though there wouldn't have been a lot in it. Technically a better player imo, though perhaps not as much of a leader on the pitch.

Sad really, I think he's a good little player and thought he was great in Holland.

 

Lampard far better player than Gerrard for me. Better knack of scoring goals and didn't try and do everything himself all the time with a 30 yard shot or ridiculous Hollywood ball. He was pretty much the sole reason Liverpool didn't win the league that year they choked, was glorious
