August 24 1957. Jimmy Greaves made his debut for Chelsea and scored a goal at the age of 17. He scored a goal on his debut for every team he played for and scored a 100 first division goals by the age of 21. He was idle and could not head a ball (they said)
I read his autobiography & expected a lot. But even I was stunned by his goalscoring record. His pre- 1st team record looks like something made up for a kids comic. Truly unbelievable. Don't know about the heading thing, but I do remember that he never 'shot' like everyone else - he side-footed instead. Don't think he ever put his foot through the ball. Another thing he did that no-one does now, was to rush the 'keeper immediately after his shot, in the hope that if he missed, he might unnerve the 'keeper or pick up a rebound. If you watch players today, they tend to stand back & watch their shots. Would deffo recommend his autobiography to any fan of football.
Probably but I just don't like totingham or them others, can we just say he played for somebody else ? then he is fine
Apart from Greaves the player, and before SKY, I loved the Saint and Greavesie football show growing up. Were the first to add fun to football preview shows. Nice memories
