The Hull area is bigger than Leicester and Sunderland, but they don't have two RL clubs.

I would have thought every Leicester fan present that day was from a family who had been brought up on a diet of First Division football, experiences and memories. We couldn't do the same. We were the new boys on the block.

Leicester has a rugby union club that gets a much bigger attendance than our two rugby league clubs combined.

It does now, I don't think it was so big and popular in the early 70's. First big crowd was 15,000 in 1974 for a visit of the Ba Ba's. Before that crowds numbered in the hundreds. League RU didn't even start until the late 80's.

I don't think the Leicester lads rampaging about were motivated by family reminiscences. The supporters you saw in the early 70s acted nothing like their parents.

Not much bigger crowds in Hull for rugby in the mid 70s.

So, new boys on the block can get large crowds. You don't need generations of history. Or is that only football? Though union crowds were always bigger than you might have thought for what was then an amateur game. Friend of mine got promoted and moved down south in 1972. Someone asked him if he fancied watching Northampton v Bedford. He expected to stroll up to a game like you did in Brid or Driff with a handful of ex players stood about and there more for the beer than anything else. He was amazed to be caught up in a traffic jam with 8,000 there.

    Yes this is the problem.
We on the other hand never had top flight football and the weak minded latched on to glory.

I used to go to watch Hull and East Riding RU in the 60's, admission was free and they had a player on the verge of the England team, Roger Sangwin ? so it must have been a decent standard. Crowds were, me, a bloke with a dog, the sponge man and a couple of old ladies. There were more on a Sunday morning watching Gerry Ingram play for Victoria on OPE playing fields in the Hull Sunday League.
Crowds at Hull's RL clubs then were abysmal too. Hull RLFC averaged about 3,000 and Rovers slightly less. I think Rovers record crowd at the old Craven Park was under 10,000.
New kids on the block can get large crowds as City showed. The 65/66 season was incredible and we broke crowd records everywhere we went. Which shows the public do come out to support a winning team. The trouble with City is we have never kept it going, never built on it, and the public knew from past experience that it wouldn't last. I still maintain there are not too many clubs who could attract the crowds we did, coming from our background of never ever winning anything, like the 40,000 odd who turned out to watch us play Millwall in the 3rd division during Christmas of 1965, no away fans either.
We had the support then, and we had it again and the city in the palm of our hands when we first won promotion to the Premier League but we threw it away.........in a similar way we did in the mid 60's. Must be a Hull thing eh ?

Are you saying those you saw wandering about in the colours of TWS were weak minded? You flatter them.
