I feel your pain! I have many 'hands in pockets' moments to stave off the temptation to swing at one of the little darlings I teach

Just shows the difference in generations....in my day and a few others on here probably, that kind of thumping was normal at school. Certainly had a few elbows in my ear for talking in a line or a blackboard rubber coming my way because I dared to turn round when the guy behind tapped my shoulder. I also got the cane on my birthday because a female teacher saw a girl kissing me in the playground I was only 12...............

 

Jesus, I remember some roughing but that is well harsh!

 

The good old days!

My dad remembers getting thrashed at school, going home to complain to his parents, and getting a second thrashing for it! Now, we send someone out of the room for two minutes for a chat about their persistant disruption and the parents come into complain!

 

Oh yes.......any misdemeanour at school was definitely kept to oneself, as you say I didn't want another hiding.................

 

My Dad grew up in a rough area of London. He was brought home by a policeman holding his ear, then his mother slapped him for bringing a policeman to her door. However, he turned out to be an upright citizen and strangely never moaned about it, but described it as a humorous anecdote, so no lasting trauma. But then he fought in a war, so knew what real trauma was....and, news alert, it isn't being called names on twitter.

 

I think the only restraint some of my teachers had was that they didn't use edged weapons. My headmaster broke his cane whilst beating me once, and with hardly a pause, picked up his spare one and carried on. I did deserve it though, as I would just keep repeating "that didn't hurt" after every whack.
Poor guy had a breakdown not long after I left.

 

We had it tough.

 

Our last headmaster was cane sadistic, he seemed to us that he was canning someone at least once a day!!! Just before I left school we were able to get into "the cane cupboard" and buried his 3 canes in the allotment at the bottom of our playing field..........Which in turn made us late for our lesson with him. He decided to give us some lines to do after school. When I explained I couldn't do that as I would miss the school bus.......he thought I was taking the micky. He decided in his wisdom he was going to cane me instead.............It was hilarious. He went to the cupboard and realised all his canes had disappeared. He was furious and was spitting in anger. I was standing out in the front of the class trying to keep a straight face........and my subordinates doing much the same. Luckily no-one else in the class knew what we had done. So as long as we kept our mouth shut we were fine. No-one else was canned during the rest of that term!!!!!
To this day as far as I know those canes are still buried in that field. (They did away with the allotments the year after I left and covered the area with turf.)

Every school had to keep a discipline book in which they had to record the names, dates and reasons for inflicting corporal punishment. When I went to the archives to look at my old school's punishment book my name didn't appear nor did my brother's even though we, and very nearly other boy in the school, were routinely thrashed. The PE master used a bloody great size 11 plimsoll across the backside, the head teacher a ruler over the knuckles and the deputy took great delight in slapping you hard behind the knees. I vowed I would never hit a child and in all my years teaching I never did so.

 

You british and your caning of the children's backsides..you really have some perverse ideas.

 

It sounds more and more barbaric and obscene the more time passes. Nobody should beat a child with a cane. Least of all an education establishement. I believe in discipline and consequences but not that sort of physical abuse.

 

Do you not think we children thought that it wasn't right? Once our generation was old enough we started the ball rolling to stop that type of bullying in the schools. Which in turn was taken up by the next generation. Sadly today though children do not always have the home discipline and guidance to respect people like the police, teachers or people with authority. Although I accept they are in a minority and you only hear mainly about the bad things that go on that involve children. The majority of us oldies have always felt there is a better way without having to beat the crap out of a youngster and still do...........
