NUFC have signed Charlton Athletic, 25 year old, goalkeeper Rob Elliott.

What? I'm sorry what was that..? So, Newcastle Utd have signed a new goalkeeper. Not a very good one either. For reasons that can only be described for Goalkeeping cover..? What in the blue hell is going on? Are NUFC taking the piss or what?

I'm not having a go at the team bringing in new players but just what the hell is going through the minds of Alan Pardew and his staff?!

Newcastle United may not be the finished article in regards to a completed squad by any means but the one thing, the very one thing we can hold our heads up high and boast about is the fact we have a shower of riches when it comes to Goalkeepers.

On our books we have no less than Steve Harper, Tim Krul (Dutch No.1), Fraser Forster (Future England GK), Ole Soderberg (Future Swedish No.1) and a England U-18 goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

So can someone with any brain cells explain to me and the rest of us why we would even consider looking at other goalkeepers for the next 10-15 years, never mind actually bring one in on a PERMANENT transfer?!

Now if the goalkeeper we were bringing in was world-class and would go straight into our first team then it may be understandable.....but Rob Elliott?...from Charlton Athletic?....What?

    Unbelievable.

The mentality of the some of the people currently employed by NUFC has been questioned without doubt, but this latest signing is simply scary.

I mean if they let Fraser Forster go to Celtic and don't trust any of the goalkeepers we have to be more than capable of coming in at No.3 choice as it were, then there needs to be serious questions asked as to who exactly is coming to these conclusions....and what the hell are they going to do next??

Sell Ole Soderberg? Sell Fraser Forster to Celtic? Retire Steve Harper early? Sell Jak Alnwick? Sell Tim Krul? Give Rob Elliott the No.1 Shirt?

Unfathomable to understand. I'm really going to need someone to explain it because I just can't work it out given the fact I have a brain that works properly.

As it stands, we have 2 senior keepers and 3 (Correct me if I'm wrong there) Youth keepers. Although it may not be the signing we're all looking for, a keeper as back up is good idea on the cheap with the inevitable exit of Forster at the end of the season. I'd rather have someone like Elliot take the spot than our youth keepers if Krul and Harper get injured because at least he has some experience of being a first team keeper, as well as being highly regarded at Charlton by the fans and the coaching staff.

Well, Tim Krul was only the Dutch #1 because Stekelenberg (spelling?) was injured. Forster is god awful as he showed last season for Celtic, Soderberg is utterly unproven at any level, ditto Alnwick. I agree there are more important areas we NEED to make signings in, but Elliot is quite highly rated by Charlton and has played first team football, unlike most of the youngsters.

It's quite clear my post goes into the decision making behind this new signing, not just the signing itself. Read between the lines u fool.

I said merge it if they want. Dont care.

How does the fact that we have signed a goalkeeper ( who was terrific when I saw him play) stop us from signing a striker and a left back?
It does not change anything, and I am sure
that the club are still trying to bring more players in.
In my opinion Elliott is top quality and could well establish himself as our no 1

Another thing, I haven't seen anywhere other than Twitter saying we've signed him.

If Krul and Harper get injured the intelligent thing to do is to have a 'recall' clause in the Forster loan deal. After all he is our player. Soderberg is more than capable of sitting on the bench in case he needs to be called upon.

The mentality of this whole signing scares me. How many keeper does a team need like? Where as we have no senior left back?

    A keeper you say?

    From Charlton you say?

    First I've heard like...

Anyway, I'm off to slaughter a pig.

This totally, and it isn't an issue of mods merge if you want. Why give them work to do for the sake of it? By starting a new thread you show disrespect to all the other posters on the already established thread by expecting them to have to repeat themselves on here!

I think that a lot of people are worried about it because Ashley has a reputation for being tight with the money, and they're concerned that after paying for Elliott (provided this story is actually true), that there won't be as much to spend on the other two or three players the team needs.

Only time will tell whether they're right to be worried about it.

Its not about disrespect at all. Once again, the essence of my post is the mentality within our team at the minute.

I could quite easily comment on the other thread about the signing, but there is a bigger issue with all of this. Just what are they going to do next?

You know you have a choice of which threads u read and comment on....?

The lad is in the last year of his contract and so will cost very little, his wages will also be relatively low. I cannot see how this will have any impact on any other signings.

I'm sorry but you didn't bring anything significantly new to the discussion. Certainly nothing to warrant starting a new thread. You could have just added it to the existing one.

Seems a decent young keeper who was available so it's not a bad acquisition for the long term.

LB and striker need to arrive before the window shuts.

Well I read the original one and all it was (no disrespect) was a copy and paste of a signing from nufc.com. The few replies I read focused entirely on the signing. Nothing wrong with that. Perfectly acceptable post.

I wanna try and look deeper into is Pardew and the staff involved in these decision making. I think my post clearly makes that point. Your also forgetting some people haven't read the other post and are already aware of the signing after reading it themselves on nufc.com.

I admit the 2 posts are similar as they involve the same signing. But the tone and questions asked are totally different.

I apologise to any disrespect and obvious anger this has caused and for the record it isnt a look at me look at me thing, I personally don't even notice or look at who starts threads.

Obviously my post isn't clear enough and the whole issue of what is actually going on about the GK situation is beyond discussing and not worth it. MOD's may as well take it off then.

So yea, we've signed a keeper then have we? Nice.
