I agree that part of the thinking behind this is to have him in mind as a potential long-term replacement for Toby.

The majority of sources see Wimmer leaving if this deal goes through. Whilst I have nothing against that, it would represent a break from Poch's firm belief in having a right foot/left foot balance at the back, as Jan would be our only left footed CB. If he misses games, tbh I'd rather we play Davies as the left CB (as he has done for Wales) than go 4 at the back. That is of course if our new DOF approves the tactical switch.

No thanks. Neither him nor Maguire are good enough on the ball to fill the CB role as Poch envisions it. Both very decent players but put it this way - their passing out from the back is more Dawson than Toby.

Keane and Mawson are (were) the 2 players with PL experience and within our budget who fit the role. I especially like the youngster at Swansea but it looks like he has committed to the club for the time being. Keane being available for £25m makes our move for Sanchez somewhat confusing. Either its yet another last minute panic or Poch sees more in him than in the HG alternatives.

Also could be down to wages. Keane was offered more than 60k a week to go to Everton.

Sanchez was apparently offered a new £50k pw contract by Ajax which he has refused to sign thanks to us turning up in the 11th hour.

On the wage front, I saw this article which puts it about right.

    http://www.101greatgoals.com/news/danny-rose-wrong-spurs-pay-ratio-sits-man-united-arsenal/

We don't pay what we don't have, unlike so many others. Liverpool pay £100m more than us in wages each season. For 7 of the last 8 seasons we've finished above them and in 4 of those seasons we've finished top 4. That's nearly £1 billion the Mousers have wasted and in that timeframe they've had to sell Mascherano, Torres, Suarez, Sterling and now Countinho.

There's more to this than burning money like a lunatic.

HITC are reporting we're after a teenage French winger named N'Cle. Not sure what their source is for that one...

Sanchez is apparently so close, that the "48 hour" countdown has begun. Apparently the deal is close, it's just add ons being sorted out. Rumours of a fee anywhere between £27 and £36m.

Much less information out there on PCD. Part of me wonders if this is a ploy to get Everton to change their stance over Barkley.

I'm starting to think that Barkley and Gazzaniga are basically done.
The Siggurdson deal going through should see Everton release Barkley and we don't want to announce a 3rd choice keeper as our first deal.

Anyone seen enough of Diop to be able to judge him? Seems to have only played a handful of games.

Might be too late. It closes at 11pm unless we can successfully claim 'faulty fax machine' unless of course you are expecting an improbable conclusion before midday

    Wow. Bold shout PNP.
I think if Barkley was anywhere near done, it'd have been leaked in the media somewhere by now, rather than just being reported as "spurs could make first official bid next week".
I think that deal will be this years deadline day extravaganza, personally.

Totally agree about the GK though. After all the **** this summer the club have had from fans over transfers, they won't announce that as the first signing! <laugh>

Based off the scraps available on Youtube, he fits into the Dembele/Sissoko mold as he's got the strength and control to drive forward from midfield with the ball at his feet, although he seems to have a better shot than either of those two.

Last word from Everton was as recent as Thursday when they said quite categorically that they haven't received any bids for him. I personally don't think it's done and also don't think anyone will bother approaching them until Siggy is in and they start getting desperate to recoup some of the money they're shelling out for him.

Based on my extensive scouting knowledge (YouTube), Diop appears to be more of a Bentaleb or Jenas type than a Barkley. Reports suggest that we've been tracking him since he was promoted to CV's senior squad and given a senior shirt number back in February (the Spanish game has a fascinating sub-plot of ascensions and demotions due to all the B teams operating in relatively high leagues). This would predate Koeman's first "kindly **** off" statement to Barkley, but of course not necessarily our own interest in the player as Poch is apparently a long time admirer.

It's never going to happen, but Sanchez, Diop, Barkley and a GK would actually be a pretty impressive window. IF it is to be believed that Sanchez can play at RB too. He certainly has the pace to do it.

You don't have to bid to have informal negotiations, though.
Admitting to that would weaken their position with Swansea on Siggurdson, too.

Diop would probably be fighting for a place in 2 rather than the 3, then.
Barkley is more likely to be in the 3 but could also be an option deeper, I guess.

How about Sanchez, Diop, Barkley, Gazzaniga and a right-back? <whistle>
    Yeah, I can't see it, either! <laugh>

I see a maximum of 2 players coming in. And 1 of those will be a third choice keeper.

Presuming the goalkeeper is one of them, I don't see us getting less than 3, KH.
Even Poch has said 3 or 4. He wouldn't say that if he knew it wasn't gonna be at least 3.
