I think he'll be fine - Slutsky seems an astute man, so I'm sure he wouldn't have signed him if he felt he had nothing to offer, both in a playing and mentoring capacity. Just got to keep hold of Sam.
I had a quick look on an Oxford forum and they seemed to be happy to sell him at £2m. So £1m isn't a bad starting place.
It is when he's been watched by top 4 PL clubs and the chairman quoted yesterday he won't be going anywhere unless it's an unbelievable offer. They sold Kemar Roofe for over £3m (from memory). Plus he has quite a while on his contract. I reckon they'll be holding out for a similar fee they got for Roofe.
Edit- our opening bid will simply flush out more realistic offers. Have to say from the reports he looks a really good prospect.
If they're holding out for 3m then 1m is fine to start with. Next offer can be 2m with add-ons, and then if they still won't take that we can offer 3m if we're willing to be pushed that far.
By which time another club will have come in with one offer, had it accepted, agreed terms with the player and signed him.
If you say so. We're hardly the first club to negotiate rather than bend over and offer whatever the club wants.
And if we'd offered 200k I'd sympathise. 1m for a player who is likely to go for 2-3m isn't that bad. If you think differently then obviously that's your opinion.
I actually agree with Syd: 1, we don't know it's a £1m bid, it's a journalist guessing / being fed info and it doesn't mean it's right. They regularly get the figures for confirmed sales wrong, never mind rumoured bids. 2; if it is a £1m bid that's fine, Oxford might offer encouragement to go just 50% higher as they want the money in quickly for their own targets before the window shuts. If we'd started at over £2m it would've therefore been silly. Or indeed it might encourage the player to put in a transfer request. This isn't one of the very many reasons to slate our club and owners.
I'm not surprised, there was a contract and a medical form, to be signed and returned by my GP in my membership envelope when it arrived. My pal who lost a leg also got one. He rang the club to discuss what he thought had been a mistake, they asked if he could play keeper. He's not guaranteed first team football, but £500 a week's not to be sniffed at!
Seems like a similar price to Clucas when we got him should get us a deal. Should be a decent full back for us
