How often do players sign a contract just before being sold though? Contracts are a tool to drive prices up more than anything nowadays.

No it wasn't. Suarez wanted out and was prepared to go to Arsenal. The PFA even got involved if i remembered correctly except that the release clause wasn't clear so it was voided.

Afterwards Suarez settled down when he knew he wasn't going to get sold and had the best season of his life.

At the moment every saints player who has wanted out after playing the nuclear threat has gotten out. Maybe Saints are holding out for VVD to do a U-turn which he will do

 

Can't see VVD backing down...he will just be made to suffer before he is sold to another team for a tasty profit...probably in January or next summer. We will still get the money (even if a bit less than before) but it will be seen to be too uncomfortable for other players to try the same trick...though admittedly most are too sensible to even think of it.

 

Should say I still think he'll go this Summer.

 

Someone prepared to sign an extended 5 year contract and then wish to move on a couple of months later?
In truth I cannot think of any players that have done that. Unless their team had been relegated out of the top flight perhaps but even then non come to memory.
I certainly accept that longer contracts are likely to push the purchase price up though.

 

We didn't want to sell. Suarez accepted that and got his move the following year (which was all agreed). He didn't start verbally attacking the club. He just got on with it, played a blinder and got his move.

That isn't happening here Bobby, it's pretty obvious it's gone past that.

 

Premier league clubs are rich in comparison to most other leagues, we dont need to sell VvD for financial reasons alone. We can sit him in the stands until January or even next summer and still get a very decent fee. Lets be honest, if somebody went behind your back and you had a chance to make life difficult for them would you?

Maybe a tad childish but i dont blame lil old Saints for making life a bit tougher for a while. Vvd will leave and most of us are prepared for that as long as its on our terms.

 

It probably won't even stop others trying it, not with the amount of money flying about, someone will always be the greedy one. It could also make people think before joining your club in future.

Who knows but it isn't as straight forward as that imo.

Not as hardly worded but basically calls you guys a small club (well no CL) and that you guys will be a bunch of liars if you don't let him leave .
