Meaningless in itself, we gave a valuable run out to some of the squad (Ben Reeves for example) and snatched a great 2-1 win. Crofts got sent off. You always say these cups don't mean much but a winning habit is a good one to get

Listened via Valley Pass. Crofts made a horrible lunge at the Exeter player; l assume Konza will play in the middle against Plymouth as we have various options at the back to play with. Should have wrapped the game up by half time; Regan Cook being the main culprit, although he did score to make amends. Clarke made a difference when he came on

Phillips and KAG had absolute blinders by all accounts.

Seven competitive games unbeaten now for the team that belongs to the fans again - and on to the Second Round!
A Cup run is always good for the squad players and for morale.
No injuries that I know of, that red card for Crofts the only obvious negative.

    UP THE ADDICKS!

And 100% respect to any Charlton fans who made the journey to watch the team tonight.

Some comments from KR reported late last night...

    https://www.clubcall.com/exeter-cit...on-irked-by-referee-tim-robinson-1859079.html

Charlton boss Karl Robinson criticised referee Tim Robinson for the late sending-off of Andrew Crofts in the Addicks' 2-1 Carabao Cup victory at Exeter.
Lee Holmes shocked Charlton when his free-kick went through a sea of bodies before nestling in the bottom corner to give Exeter the lead after 54 minutes.
Charlton levelled in the 72nd minute when Karlan Ahearne-Grant crossed and Billy Clarke's effort was deflected past Christy Pym.
The tie was decided after 79 minutes when Regan Charles-Cook produced a fine finish, steering the ball into the bottom corner.
The Addicks were then reduced to 10 men three minutes later when Crofts saw red for a late challenge on Matt Jay.

    Robinson said:
"The referee was poor, I don't care whether I get done by the FA.
The tackle on Saturday wasn't a sending off (Lee Novak's early dismissal against Bristol Rovers) and tonight's decision was disgusting.
Crofty has gone to ground, the lad has seen him, turned his left leg and backed into him. How is that a red card?
But it is Charlton and they see we are on the right way up and they don't like it.
am sick and tired of getting punished when we do things the right way.
Apart from that, I was very pleased with the performance."

I have not seen the Crofts incident, but I did see what Lee Novak did.
Although Novak's challenge was not the worst or most malicious ever made, and some referees might have given a yellow card for it rather than a straight red, I would not flatly deny it was a sending off offence at all. Everybody will have a different view and of course KR has much more football experience than I have. But if our opinions differ on the Novak incident then I'm naturally reluctant to accept Robinson's view that the Crofts dismissal was "disgusting" as gospel.

And saying that he does not care if he gets done by the FA, and that "they" see Charlton are on the way up and they don't like it strikes me as nothing more than silly grandstanding.
A shadowy cabal of FA/EFL officials and referees don't want Charlton to succeed and are willing to unjustly send our players off in order to keep us down?
Oh come on! We aren't Chelsea and Karl Robinson is not Jose Mourinho. And even Mourinho just sounded dumb when he used to say stuff like that.

I can understand why Robinson wishes to ingratiate himself with Charlton fans, particularly those in the North stand which he wants to be able to encourage to raise the noise levels inside the Valley when needed (as he did very well last Saturday).
There's nothing wrong with that - lack of passion from the stands is something our relegation and the listless season that followed has made much worse now than I can ever remember it being.
But for me KR seems to be trying too hard, to the point where he's insulting the intelligence of Charlton fans.

It's difficult to tell how much of what KR says is genuinely impulsive heart-on-the-sleeve stuff, and how much is calculated to get fans onboard and regarding him as the saviour who deserves their passionate devotion before his team has actually earned it. It's an academic point I suppose, since he is not going to change his approach. I don't know whether Robinson used to say these kinds of things when he was MK Dons manager.

As a fan I suppose I would rather see a manager showing passion and even fury from time to time, and being animated rather than impassive. But how a manager behaves is very secondary to me compared to the results he achieves.
Three years ago against my own instincts I gradually came to respect and even like Jose Riga. And it was not because he waved his arms around on the touchline like a demented Thunderbirds puppet and said daft things to the press specifically to impress fans.

The Novak sending off on saturday was fairly clear cut in my book. He might have escaped with a yellow on another day (the word 'escaped' suggesting something I guess). I can't say anything about last night, but the idea of a conspiracy against Charlton somwhere (they see we are on the up and they don't like it) is sort of worrying as it suggests a madman in charge.
I don't want to get on KR 's back, as there are too many fans willing to do that too fast. But his enthusiasm in front of a mike does get him carried away. Last night was a good win. Why lambast the ref? Fans do that on the terraces but ir's not really necessary for the manager to. He got us another win and that's what is winning me round, but I do try and avoid his interviews.

To be fair, fans at the game on CL all say the sending off was harsh. Just don't need a conspiracy on a night our youngsters did fo well. Keep the football coming Karl.

    Positives from the game..
    1) Crofts being banned for three games <ok>
    2) All the youngsters playing well <diva>
    3) A bit of game time from Reeves prior to Saturday:emoticon-0169-dance

    Negatives..
    1) Gobbo defending another player against a red card (the Exeter fans feel it was a clear red) :(
    2) Gobbo obviously telling the players to go in two footed??? ... FYI Gobbo, you can't do that these day <grr>

Thing is being a manager in any walk of life, you have to defend the decisions of your team in public. You'd be a crap leader if you hung them out to dry. In private, tell them that they're a twat!

Maybe it would be better if Jacko or Bowyer did the post-match. I can't believe that KR talks sh1te all the time, maybe just after the match when he's a bit wound up and has a mic under his nose. The CEO has been successfully gagged after all?

Why would any Manager tell their players to go in two footed? It isn't obvious he is telling the players to go in two footed. It is supposition on your behalf because two players have been sent off in two games. Can we stop with the Gobbo epithet. He is doing a good job on the pitch, that is where it matters. He can recite the full works of Shakespeare off the pitch as long as we are winning games I couldn't give a ****. Most good Managers defend their players publicly, Wenger, Ferguson, Mourinho etc. You don't know what he is saying to them in the dressing room.

An excellent result last night with eleven changes against a good div 2 side. The youth players showed what they could do.

You are wrong Dick.... Wenger often says he did not see the incident in post match interviews if he does not want to comment on a incident... rather than publicly defending a player when he shouldn't.

PS.... I stop calling Gobbo .. Gobbo ... when the man starts acting like a grown up in his post match interviews rather than a petulant teenager playing Football Manager!

Good result, had some on us at 4/1 thought that was way too big
Minutes for a lot of fringe players.
Only negative was that comment from Robinson saying 'it is Charlton, they can see we are on the up', stupid comment to make and no idea what he's talking about. Completely needless!
