As well as knocking out his own side in the semis....

In all seriousness they can't really talk about winning trophies when they have one in the last ten years.

Watched that Debate thingy on Sky, I didn't like the way the two ex Liverpool played spoke about Southampton and felt that they missed the point. They spoke about Southampton as a selling club and the way they said it was in a derogatory fashion. Take a step back and you have to realise that clubs like Southampton need to ensure they are financially safe for the future, if a huge bid comes in they need to look at the big picture and take the money.
At this moment in time do you need the money from the sale of VVD? I'd say no, the TV money has come in and you've had a few paydays over the last few seasons courtesy of our good selves.

Long term should you take the money and invest it? Maybe, I'm not really sure there.

Over the next week or you'll either get a huge payday or you will have a very unhappy player that could cause a lot of unrest within the club.

The thing is Luv, that we have sold players in the past to pay off a loan from our owner that paid for the Staplewood complex. This season we are debt free and no longer need to sell anybody.

So like I said, long term are you in a position to turn down a huge offer or is it sensible to look at the bigger picture and use that payday?

Take away that mentality of "**** you Virgil" and look at the bigger picture? Something the Sky show seemed unable to do, it was a poor programme.

If you look at the players we sold it made sense at the time, Sterling was not worth the money and never will be, Torres was broken and we knew it, Suarez had stayed with the promise that he could move. Only the last one was a mistake IMO but we didn't have much choice we had promised him the move.
Outside of those I don't remember us being over a barrel.

Yeah I agree, buy still think Carra was missing the point and not really debating the more interesting issue of do you really need to sell? They both just took it that you do.

In the past we did have to sell because we were short of a bob or two, not quite the same now, we have money in the bank which we aren't splashing around and would prefer to be able to play with what we have, VD is going against that for his own gratification despite what we have done for him.

Of course they did, it's easier that way. They're not really interested in the intricacies of our little club. They just want to jerk off at a big transfer story.

The discussion (what I saw) was tantamount to them saying that we exist to feed other clubs. They are also at it on the BBC apparently.

What about the "short career, wanting to play at the highest level" argument?
Contracts are the issue here, simply shouldn't be signing long term contracts but then again if they don't they could move for free?

Also in the past we had to sell or accept the player moving on for very little or nothing the following year, becuase they had 1 or 2 years left on contract.

Just mentioned this, is it better to sign long term so that the selling club get money or sign shorter contracts and run them down so that you can move? It would be different right now if there was a 12 or 18 month contract in place and is that better all round or **** on your club as you lose money?

Why would we want to sell to one of our competitors if we don't have to?
