Have to say Virgil that if you feel so insulted and want to achieve major honours in your short career.....

Why the **** did you sign a 6 year contract and accept the captaincy after saying you wanted out you dick!?!?

Yep, ever since he changed agents, this was in the post. Sad.

    True!

However, football is a business and some people think selling for 20mil less to save face might happen. Not happening imo. The highest bid get's the player. I know fans are emotionally invested and I get that. But it's business at the end of the day.

You can just tell that Liverpool fans right now are feeling the same sensations of thrill and exhilaration they get when the hub-cap finally prises off.

Exactly, I find it amusing how personal fans take this. Like the player has written this statement himself.

He wants to leave that's a given. Once he has decided that he has basically given permission to his agents to do what they want. You'd hope they would act in a way that portrays the player in a good light but when there are millions at stake these businesses will do whatever necessary. Virgil could obviously step in if he wanted too but he's employed them to do a job.

Where's this evidence that you'll pay 20 Mil more?

Chelsea have offered 58 apparently, if you're willing to pay 20 more he'd already be a pool player.

I have always thought that one day a footballer would challenge a football contract in court....this could be the one. Keep paying him Saints....don't give him a leg to stand on. The losers if football contracts are challenged won't be the top guys, but will be journeymen footballers who need security. Make him sit out to January, Saints. By then the teams vying for the title (which obv. won't include Liverpool :)) may be willing to pay top money for him....even though he won't be match fit.

That was just a random example. People on here saying let's sell for less to Chelsea etc.

    Total delusion imo.

I'm not sure of the maths but is 70 mill minus loyalty bonus much worse than 58 million without the bonus? Also, the sell on to Celtic will be significantly lower. Is there a chance we might get MORE out of this apparently lower offer?

I see Virgil's statement also says he isn't disappointed that his private meetings with Saints became public.

Not the first meeting he wish had stayed private. Might want to get that Blackpool season pass, might as well use your gardening leave wisely.

I would have thought the contract is quite clear about being contracted to play. Refusal means not fulfilling this.

There also will not be anything in the contract about having to sell him if he wants to leave

So I understand the idea about not giving him a leg to stand on. But right now I am not clear what that leg would be

The only thing I can think of is claiming mental health issues making him not available to play. He hasn't done that and the statement just issued doesn't seem like it can be interpreted that way

Wasn't Tevez fined when he made himself unavailable for selection (admittidely he left the country) ?

    Although I totally agree with your approach, unfortunately I think if Southampton chose to let it go through the courts, two things would happen;
The PFA would weigh in with support for VDV and future Saints targets may be put off signing.

Restraint of trade comes to mind....if he claims he isn't free to pursue his career.

Worth remembering that with 6 years on his contract. His valuation will only go up like Mario. we're buying him for double what Juve paid for him 2 years ago and he barely played. And Virgil is proven. We won't be losing money by not selling him, like keeping a empty house in london as an investment.

    Potentially yes especially if:

    1. The loyalty bonus is as high as mentioned on an earlier page (20 odd million - which if actually true definitely explains why we definitely weren't selling until the request came in)

    2. The sell on comes off before loyalty bonus would have been paid
