    You can argue that the house of cards has fallen because Barca is one of those powerful clubs who do not sell their star players. PSG have come in and took what they wanted.

    I think the other super powers such as Bayern and Real will also look over their shoulders now ..

    Barcelona 's president is getting lots of stick for having a ...too realistic release clause on the Neymar contract. :)

    Even last year no one would have remotely thought that £200m (when the world record was £89m) could be triggered. That is before people realised that £200m for giving a whole nation prestige and pride ahead of hosting the WC was cheap at the price.

    So lesson 1: release clause for players like Messi and Ronaldo (if they were to be inserted at all) should start at £1 billion...

    Spanish law says they have to. You're right it was strangely low although you'd think high enough. But fact we're seeing good players go for 70-90m in last couple years makes the 200m look not too much more.

    Madrid do the right thing with theirs, all their top players have release clauses of like 400m up towards 1billion for ronaldo and benzema. Barca don't seem to be that fussed with messis at 300m I think it was.

    Can inagine barca might be a bit more careful going forward now

    I think there is now no sum that can be an adequate release clause if a player can be paid 450mil over 5 years. the 200mill odd fee is actually the least part of it.

    However its a two way street. A player might now sign with a billion release clause.

    If a club says to a player that they are going to put a billion on his release clause the won't the player then say "if I'm worth that much I want 2 million a week?" he'll want what the club thinks he's worth.

    Fee's and salaries will rise.
