The Virgil Van Dijk Stays at Southampton Thread

I remember him walking down the touch line at the Watford game and refusing to acknowledge the crowd, who wanted to cheer him for his Euro exploits. With the benefit of hindsight it was obvious something was wrong then.

 

That's the key timing. Some fans jump straight to him being left out of the Europa games as the problem, yet it was clear that the problem between him and the club started the moment he came back from the tournament. It was radio silence on social media to the fans too.

 

A cruel snub. Like, how were we to know his head had been turned. Then those justification interviews after he left, what a prat.

 

I mentioned that in an earlier post...I thought there was something wrong. Up till then, he'd always engaged with the fans.

 

I will always thank him for the seasons before last, but I subconsciously genuinely forgot he had ever been here. Sad that he ruined his reputation like that.

 

I also remember him coming out to acknowledge the 7000 of us in the San Siro while we were locked in post game despite him missing out on one of the biggest nights in the clubs history... We can all point out to individual moments.



I stand by its probably somewhere in the middle... He clearly acted up at some point but the club handled it poorly.

 

The truth is probably that his agent turned his head for him with the bullshit story that Man Utd wanted him. Whatever went on behind the scenes, the agent has to bear a large portion of the blame.

 

Hate football agents......and Neymars dad.

There is a saying that a reputation is hard earned, but easily lost. We mustn't forget everything that Fonte did for us.

Oh for sure. But if you're friends with someone for 20 years, and then they turn into a complete dick, you stop being their friend and you no longer invite them to your parties. Nothing to do with loyalties etc. More to do with them being a dick.
