Mark Twain is the king of quotes.

I was told many years ago that he said during a visit to England that he wanted to die in Wolverhampton. On being asked why he said he thought the difference between Wolverhampton and death would be so small he wouldn't notice.

I can't find that attributed to him anywhere. Anyone know who did say it?

Could it have been the Town Planners who put that Underpass on the way to Molyneux?

I used to go out with a girl from Wolverhampton.

Sounds like the start of a joke, but it's true. It was the early 80s and it really is (was?) grim oop there in the black country.

Me too, on the rebound after the break up of my first marriage, I had a thing with a girl living there. She was at The Poly and lived in some flats near the ground. I used for drink in The Still. A pub with good beer and no electronic machines in the centre of town.

It was hard hit by Thatcher and having a few quid in my pocket marked me out a bit compared to many locals. A number decided to 'try it on' when they heard the accent. Overall not a place to get stuck for any extended length of time.

Cant be as bad as Hartlepool.
Went out with a girl from there when I was 18. Went up to see her and when I got off the train the whole town stopped and went silent. Think I was the first non white person most of them had ever seen <laugh>
And boy was it a serious hole...and I come from and have always lived in the Woolwich, Abbeywood, Thamesmead area.
Harylepool makes here look like St Tropez
    <yikes>

    "Off the train.......OFF THE TRAIN?"

I was friends (really, just friends) with a girl who I met at a Clash gig. She lived in a mining village in deepest darkest Nottinghamshire. The nearest railway line was 20 miles and over 100 years away. This was about 1983t and the miners we're on strike. I turned up in the local pub in full psychobilly garb with an orange flat top and loooong quiff.

It was like one of those scenes from a Western when the piano player stops and the whole place goes silent but for the muttering. If I'd been a twenty foot Purple People Eater from Mars, they couldn't have been more shocked. Nice people when they got over what I looked like. Cheapest beer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Leicester will no doubt appeal this, given the deep-seeded chavviness of the club...

It's Wolverhampton. I'm not sure it matters.

Has anyone mentioned this new rule about a two game ban for a dive for next season? Apparently controversial decisions that win a penalty or get someone sent off will be reviewed by a panel (manager, ref, player) the following Tuesday.

Heard some discussion about whether it's a good thing on the radio but all discussion has missed one rather important bit of info - who decides whether the incident is going to be reviewed by the panel? If there is any subjectivity involved in this, what's the betting that certain decisions in favour of certain teams won't even make it as far as the panel!

On a similar line, my son was just watching the Pool friendly and drew my attention to a late penalty for them. There was an absolutely hilarious dive by Origi that would surely qualify for this new treatment. The odd thing is though, there appeared to be a penalty awarded *and* a card for diving! I can only assume the ref thought it was kind of a two part event, where there was a penalty worthy foul and then the player dived. I'm not even sure that's possible! Anyway, the fact he received a yellow might mean that under the new system it can't even go to the panel. Murky times indeed!

The "he was touched so was entitled to go down" defence will be trotted out when it suits the panel imo

Yes, that is something that could easily scupper the whole system. When it suits them anyway! Surely most of the controversial decisions are when the forward "wins" the penalty, and how much they go out of their way to do so.
