In the terms of experience and talent as a centre half he's the best we have had. Ok he's a bit older and won't play the whole season, but we have dropped a level and two seasons ago when fit he was out best centre half. Everyone said Faye was too slow and past it, but it Slutsky gets his tactics right and doesnt defend to high up the pitch Dawson will be fine. It's his partner, whoever that may be is what you need to worry about.
A quick look on page 1 should give a good idea of where we are, and to me it doesn't look good. Just on the number of players 9 first team players and the 6 loans have gone to be replaced by 5 incoming.

Tymon wasn't first team and Bruce and Maloney didn't really play last season, but besides that fair enough.
Not every player we have can play, we can only field 11 plus a bench, which Maloney often sat on. That makes him first team. Prick. Can we not just ban this southern hemisphere dickhead!
