Excellent article by Jeff Powell in today's Mail... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4737090/Now-time-dig-deep-help-Stan-Man.html
Posted this before but it deserves another showing.... Must admit I get a bit misty eyed watching that.....what a bloody good team we were and to be fair Leeds weren't that shoddy either......
Some great footage there Stan, a little prior to my first exposure to Stan (think my Dad started taking me about in the final few.games of 75/76 season....hence hooked for life). A few things stand out in the video.... WTF were Cardiff thinking of - yellow shorts with red jerseys.... The physicality of the tackling was refreshing to see - could you imagine a modern era footballer being kicked as much? Not entirely sure that was a penalty - looked just outside the box..... Loftus Road hasn't changed much (except for the seats - bet the toilets were just as rank then) Kits look so much better without sponsors logos all over the front of the shirt. The pitch actually looked good for a 70s game. Am I imagining it, or is that Grenfell Tower you can see when the camera pans in from the School End? We were a good team to watch, pleasing on the eye - easy to see why we gathered a good "second team" following. How good was Stan.......
I'm sure Givens dived, he was quite sneaky like that. That was the first of only 3 times I have sat in South Africa Road. Ellerslie Road stand had just been built and finished but was not open for that game. My Dad immediately got us season tickets for the new stand. I didn't need the toilet in those days as I was 11 and had a stronger bladder untested by several pre match pints. The shirts were great, no sponsor and no poncey badge. We were an outstanding team to watch that season and for several after. It was a joy, very little tension (no inflated expectations) great competitive football, real characters, brutal tackling, little time wasting as far as I can remember, match finished and you forgot about it until the next one, no one talked about the money. Rose tinted glasses doubtless, but there must have been something great to keep me going all these years.
No Steel that's the BBC site and a couple of blocks just the other side of the westway link, Grenfell is slightly further north towards Latimer Road
I want to buy the stream but the site wont let me do I have to wait till tomorrow or am I doing something wrong
I seem to remember one of the European home games where Stan gets the ball near the half way line, does a bit of magic and waves goodbye to the defender. He then accelerates towards the penalty area, glances behind him, waits for the defender to catch him up and then wins a penalty from him. Did I imagine all that?
I was at this game, along with about 50 other QPR supporters. Bowles scored the winner late on and as he went back for the kick off I think he gave supermac a bit of a Eric Morecombe. If I recall think it was Grand National day. 3 April 1976 Newcastle United A 2–1 McLintock, Bowles 30,134 If someone can find a clip please put it up for me thanks. I am *hit at this sort of thing.
Connections were... well better than normal, so anyone at C&S come say hello to the silver fox in the long sleeved home shirt (which may be a mistake, it's very sticky)....
