Yep, paying top dollar for a top striker has always been the norm, to pay £50m+ for FBs is astounding, to offer £75m for a CB is totally unreal and the same could be said for offering £75m for a MF that plays for a team that has just "done a Leicester". £125m for an 18yo that has had a good season? Some clubs (United and Chelsea among them) have always paid above the norm for individual players they really wanted, this season it seems everyone is paying way above for average players.
No he's spot on. However, I'm looking for the bit in the article where he admits he is just as guilty of paying over inflated fees. He's as big a part of the problem as other managers he's having a sly dig at.
Jose never spent anything like £90m on any one player whilst at Chelsea, I think the most he spent on any one player was Costa at £32m. Granted he made a few £30m ish signings (Shevchenko, Fabregas, Batshuayi). And even before Roman came to Chelsea you had Real Madrid paying £60m for Zidane. Before Jose we didnt pay a ridiculous amount for players, we just bought a ridiculous amount of players all for £15-£20m, which was a decent price back then, but not ridiculous, Real had set that bar much higher.
If Madrid pay 200m Euros for an 18 year old who has had one season of football (albeit a very good season), I will piss myself laughing. How stupid!
Kinda. He basically excused it by saying "Well we needed a striker....and strikers cost a lot" So its okay to spend a lot if you "Need" the player....
Aye but Zidane was a one off - he was the only signing Real made that season and he was by far one of the best players in the world at the time. The problem with Chelsea back then was not how much they paid for any one player, but their willingness to pay £15-20m for just about anyone. It wasn't just Mourinho, it was pretty much every manager after Abramovich took over. When you start throwing that sort of money at dross and players who are past it like Veron, Duff, Parker, SWP, Mikel, Anelka, Bosingwa, Zhirkhov etc then it pushes loads of money into the bottom of the market, which ultimately bubbles to the top. Particularly when you are doing it so often in a year. People made a big deal out of LVG spending £250m over his two seasons, but Chelsea spent £150m in 2003, 13 years earlier. Either way, I do find it quite funny to see Mourinho now complaining about the market. He never had any problem with it when it was Chelsea with the unsustainable spending and he was benefiting with back to back league titles.
I'm not , And Piss off, By the way, I thought Andriy Shevchenko was a Roman Abrahimovic signing to be fair.
Yeah, but Chelsea bought a whole new squad for that. LvG got 3 players. He is complaining about the value of players not the amount of players people are signing.
I know it was more than 3, am having fun! I think in Romans first season we signed: Juan Veron Joe Cole Hernan Crespo Damien Duff Wayne Bridge Glenn Johnson Claude Makalele Adrian Mutu Marco Ambrosio Mikael Forsell Scott Parker Jurgen Macho Geremi That's 13 players for £150m! Thats half a squad You couldn't even buy 13 youth players for £150m these days. EDIT: Oh and Neil Sullivan, so 14 players.
Well from what I heard Jose wanted Samuel Eto'o, but Roman thought Shevchenko made more financial sense because Roman wanted to boost our profile in Eastern Europe, and Sheva, as a Ukranian hero, would have helped that. Where as Jose saw that Eto'o was one of the best strikers on the planet and that Sheva, although considered world class by many, was past his prime and a £30m investment on a 30 year old was daft. Roman won.
paying £160m for Mbappe must make commercial sense for madrid. On top of the wages of £200k-£250k a week. Madrid have been copying United's business model and I wonder whether they have sponsors and deals , lined up. Still £160m is a huge amount to recoup and even the winning of the CL would provide a fraction of the cost. However, you look at it, it does not seem to make financial sense even in these days of inflated prices. They are not in a position where they could miss out on CL or anyhting like that. They will always be challenging for the title.
