Every day I'd have JT over Wes Brown, because Brown was unreliable. Certain players are ravaged with bad injuries and it tarnishes their careers and Brown was one. There's no way he should be used as an example of somebody ****e who has won a PL trophy.

    There's plenty of other examples.

    Why?
Because he popped up for 3 or 4 seasons (for one of which he missed most games due to an eight month ban), shouted a lot, scored a few goals and swore?
Maybe Flash in the Pan is a little harsh, but he certainly could not be labelled the PL's best ever player.
Surely that has to be Giggs! For all he achieved and the level he managed to stay at for so long.

In those 3 or 4 seasons he was a major influence on winning 5 titles (granted one wasn't a PL title so to some fans it wasn't proper football...). That's an achievement in itself!

As you said, you were 12 at the time but clearly knew more than Fergie <laugh>

Did you rate Zola and/or Bergkamp?

I think the article is going for a different angle than 'best ever player', I think they're looking for most iconic player or something.

In terms of iconic, you might as well put Cantona's face on the PL trophy. He was the star attraction when the PL was founded, he carried the burden of the new concept and delivered it into a new era of football for this country.

Subjectively, there's always going to be better players. I'd put Scholes down as the best in the PL era as he's my favourite ever player. That's always going to be subjective, there's many players who would be listed in that shortlist which Giggs would inevitably win as you say. Others, Bergkamp, Henry, Ronaldo, Shearer, Keane, Lampard, Steven, Rooney... consistency being the key.

You rated Cantona? What you've posted in this thread suggests otherwise! <laugh>

What he posted on this thread suggests he's no idea, has never seen him play and has simply guessed.

Best player = most goals. Standard premier league era fan bollocks.

That has to come into consideration though. For me Cantona was a very iconic player for United as was Niall Quin for Sunderland etc.

I rated Cantona, but feel he was overrated by many.

You'd never find a United fan who would rate Andy Cole, cracking player that he no doubt was, higher than Cantona.

    Cole scored far more goals.

People called Flanno the 'Red Cafu' in the only full season he played for us!

Cafu even came over to watch him play and said he can see why people make the comparison <laugh>

Cantona was the most influential player the EPL has had imo, he turned the perennial chokers into the most dominant force English football has seen, Leeds were nowhere until he arrived and won the title, then they stupidly sold him 3 months into the new season to then 10th placed United, 6 months later they'd won it by 10 points. If he hadn't karate' kicked that twat at Palace it's more than likely he would've won the title every year he played in England.
I don't understand how anyone could possibly rate glory boy Gerrard above him, the most influential thing he ever did to win the league was fall over.

Top 5 PL players of all time I would go:

    1. Thierry Henry
    2. Eric Cantona
    3, Alan Shearer
    4. Ryan Giggs
    5. Steven Gerrard

Kevin Phillips has been influential in the premier league. He's the only guy to have won the European golden boot and still holds the record for most away goals scored in a season.

It's really hard for me to get involved in these threads <laugh>
