People will always find something to tease about...whether it's your football club, your hair or weight....but it can't hurt you if you don't let it. I'm proud to support Saints rather than some big club that I have no link to....of course I don't include those fans for whom Liverpool, Chelsea etc are their local sides. It loses its power to hurt if you greet it all with a funny reply or nonchalance. I learned that from school bullies years ago.

In my experience, having lived in London for more years than I care to remember, the only fans of other clubs who laugh at Saints are people who never go near a football ground from one season to the next. Most of the genuine Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea etc fans I know or have known over the years have been pretty respectful.

Southampton aren't a laughing stock, far from it in fact.

You should be proud that the bigger clubs want your players

Btw is it true VVD has now officially handed in a transfer request? Those seem to be today's rumours?
Nothing concrete from what I can see though.

Yeah I agree. A large part of football/sport is the banter you have between fellow supporters. I don't get offended by it as I give it out just as readily as anyone else, it is just part of the game. We clearly aren't a laughing stock, and the majority of clubs would be/are envious of what we have achieved, but people will always find something to take the piss out of.

He didn't mean a laughing stock in general, he meant over this issue, and he'd be right.

You can't make a formal complaint about the RS tapping him up, see them apologise publicly and state they've dropped any interest in the player - and then a month or so later sell him to them, without looking a bit daft.

Possible of course, but all the articles just quote Pellegrino's recent interview and he certainly didn't say that. In fact he finished by saying the way was still open for VVD's return to the squad. Mauricio said that he has been told the club isn't selling Virgil, but he doesn't want him with the team if his head isn't 100%. Always possible somethings changed of course.

Saintmagic - I'm confused a little. You posted a one liner, "We are a laughing stock" and then the above definition. You say you sit in the mid-table fan thing, so are you saying you don't think we're a laughing stock?

If so, bit odd that you made that one line post in the first place.

I did think this but his latest post doesn't say that. Just a bit odd to make a one line statement that it then seems isn't your view.

We certainly aren't a laughing stock and as of today, we haven't sold him to Liverpool, so are still not a laughing stock. I'd agree that it looks daft if we sell him to him for a fee that isn't £60m +

I don't think the fee is relevant tbh. If he wants away and is chucking his toys out the pram then it'd be prudent to sell him on, just not to Liverpool

It was slightly tongue in cheek, but I am sure you have come across supporters of other sides who take the piss over our history of selling players?

It was investigated and dropped as it's no different to what a lot of transfers involve. A couple of drinks in a hotel bar somewhere else in the country, no biggy. It was probably just a coincidence they were both at the same hotel anyway <whistle>

Yes of course. Doesn't make us a laughing stock and now you've explained it was tongue on cheek... I can breathe again :)

He'll end up at Man City anyway and Liverpool will be the one looking like idiots.

Personally I don't see him going to City despite him being the perfect CB for them, appears they have more pressing concerns rather than CB. I hope he doesn't go to you guys as it would set a precedent for future transfers in terms of tapping up. That and Liverpool are bell ends.
